Consumer Reports recommends Broil King Rib Roaster
July 2018 issue CR recommends their favorite BBQ products. I'm wondering if anyone has any thoughts about this one? There is very little info or reviews about it, but CR wrote :
Broil King’s rib roaster lets you cook up to three slabs of baby back ribs in this porcelain-coated roasting box, which we found produced succulent ribs and prevented the fat drippings from falling onto coals or gas burners, reducing the chance for flare-ups.
Youtube user videos (2nd one is in German but you can see he puts 6 racks in it):
If you watch the Youtube videos, in one case they start on the grill then transfer to the cast iron box, then finish again on the grill. That is, it's sort of like crutching, but with a pot instead of with aluminum foil.
Large Big Green Egg, Weber Performer Deluxe, Weber Smokey Joe Silver, Fireboard Drive, 3 DigiQs, lots of Thermapens, and too much other stuff to mention.

Given that Max Good tends to hew pretty closely to the ethics of Consumers Union, but has a level of specific expertise, that’s valid. OTOH, CR doesn’t rate products that they have "looked closely at," without running it through a standardized test. Very clever engineers, but perhaps not up to the wide variety of cookers and the wide variety of purposes.
Potkettleblack and DSiewert I may have been a bit harsh with my comment but my experience with them goes back 30-35 years ago. Back than either they were clueless about the things they rated or?? This may not be the case now. I don’t know cause I Haven’t read their reviews in years.
My parents bought 2 cars based on their reviews and both were in the junk yard before 50k miles. Just 1 example.
I’d add that CR has reviewed 185 gas grills and 14 charcoal. They test gas with thermocouple thermometers for evenness at high and low temp, speed to temp, an indicrect cook and a direct hot cook. I’m not clear if they test searing, or rotisserie burners.
A Consumer Reports grilling expert shares his favorite grilling tools, from tongs and a basting brush to a grill skillet. These can elevate your skills from average to amazing.
I was curious, and Broil King’s suggestion is to basically use the roaster like a crutch, after an hour of smoke.
I dont feel the need to own one, but I don’t crutch ribs, either.
I updated the original post - the guy in the 1st youtube video made an English & German version so I changed the link to the English one.
Also, I was looking at "dutch oven ribs" videos and this type of method is pretty common. Instead of a grate they use tough vegetables like onions and bell peppers to keep the ribs above the surface. This Texas recipe in particular had me drooling, that's one killer stew at the end to go along with the ribs.
