Hi all - wanted to share my experiences with the 7 lb vertical sausage stuffer which I purchased from BassPro 2 years ago. The stuffer is made by Weston Products:WestonProducts.com
I liked the stuffer as it reclines and you can refill the chamber without having to fully remove and had a reasonable capacity at 7lbs - this reminded me of a smaller version of the stuffers we used in culinary school. I've had 3 problems though with quality related to the metal used and want to let folks know you may want to avoid this product.
1) On preparing for the first use, I found 2 tubes with holes in them, which would end up filling your casings on the tube with meat that would come out through the holes. I will give the company credit as they did immediately replace the tubes with new ones.
2) this weekend while making hotdogs - and almost 2 years to the date of buying the unit, I noticed that stainless steel threads on the stuffer used to attach the tubes were literally disintegrating. The metal had fatigued in several spots and had worn off and chipped in.
3) also this weekend I noticed while cleaning the tubes that the metal at the end of the 1/2" tube was stripping off into thin metal ribbons which could potentially come off into your sausage. I removed about 1.5" of metal threads and hope none actually came off in the hotdogs.
I contacted the company and they replied promptly - again good customer service. Unfortunately though, they are out of the parts and at 2 years, the stuffer is beyond the 1 year warranty.
Given I have had 3 problems related to the quality of the metal in the product, I cannot recommend purchasing from this company. I have only made about 50 pounds of sausage with it over the last 2 years - there is no way that is enough wear and tear to cause this kind of metal fatigue. I've attached a photo of some of the threads that have worn off where you can see the top thinner thread is almost all gone and chunks of the biggest thread have also broken off. I am not sure what has caused this as i've never dropped it or misused. It normally sits in the original box with all the parts carefully packed away until needed.
Appreciate any leads on good quality stuffers people may have.
Thanks
Steve
