I'm looking for a grinder for my dried chili peppers. Need something that will get the grind to a powder. Does anyone have a suggestion of where to get it from and how much I should spend?
I grind a lot pepper in that thing. I wouldn't be afraid to go with another brand though as I have had issues with it after years of daily use for protein shakes etc.
A burr coffee grinder would work - manual or electric. Burr is better than blade because the grind is more consistent and the material falls through the grinder once it is the proper size. With a blade grinder, you just keep it spinning until the desired particle size is reached. But it's not 100% consistent, so you will probably end up with an inconsistent grind - some particles will be larger than you want for powder.
My wife got us a Vitamix. She makes smoothies and green drinks and we use it to powder our garlic and onions. When the coffee grinder went out it also took over those duties.
Attjack Yes, I raise garlic and onions on my farm. We dehydrate first, then grind to powder. EdF mine insisted on the Vitamix. I was wise enough to stand back and say, "Yes dear."
I use a burr coffee grinder from Wal Mart. Think it was about $20. Use it mostly for grinding peppercorns and a little coffee once in awhile. Vitamix's are spendy and unless you are doing a lot of grinding and making a lot of smoothies you should not need to spend that kind of coin.
