Looking for a good spice grinder

    Hello Pitmasters,

I'm looking for a grinder for my dried chili peppers. Need something that will get the grind to a powder. Does anyone have a suggestion of where to get it from and how much I should spend?

I use this for grinding spices.

      That's pretty "industrial strength"! ;-)

I grind a lot pepper in that thing. I wouldn't be afraid to go with another brand though as I have had issues with it after years of daily use for protein shakes etc.

Ditto. I got a grinder at a garage sale and it’s a dedicated spice grinder. I clean it out by running some dried rice through it and wiping it out.

A burr coffee grinder would work - manual or electric. Burr is better than blade because the grind is more consistent and the material falls through the grinder once it is the proper size. With a blade grinder, you just keep it spinning until the desired particle size is reached. But it's not 100% consistent, so you will probably end up with an inconsistent grind - some particles will be larger than you want for powder.

However not all is lost. You sift out the powder and then use the remainder for 'granules.'

burr grinders some times gum up with dried chilis.

I use a burr grinder - i run white rice through it periodically to clean it out.

My wife got us a Vitamix. She makes smoothies and green drinks and we use it to powder our garlic and onions. When the coffee grinder went out it also took over those duties.

What do you mean powder your garlic and onions? Are you drying and then grinding them yourself?

Attjack Yes, I raise garlic and onions on my farm. We dehydrate first, then grind to powder. EdF mine insisted on the Vitamix. I was wise enough to stand back and say, "Yes dear."

I use either a magic bullet or a cheap blade style coffee grinder.

It's manual, but a burr grinder that always gets good reviews:

That's the one I converted to use with my cordless drill.

I use a burr coffee grinder from Wal Mart. Think it was about $20. Use it mostly for grinding peppercorns and a little coffee once in awhile. Vitamix's are spendy and unless you are doing a lot of grinding and making a lot of smoothies you should not need to spend that kind of coin.
