    Mortar/Pestle/Grinder

I believe I have finally purchased my final Mortar and Pestle after using this one for a few weeks.
I don't have much luck or patience with pepper mills and find they are a little too finicky for me.
This thing grinds perfectly to my taste, it is hygienic to clean, and does a quick job on herbs and spices and it is kind of cool to boot.
HEFTY feel to it and the cast iron fans would enjoy it.

Heavy on the cool. Key word is heavy.

For me the heavy is a good trade off for functionality. It does the job quickly.

      Now that's an interesting idea...

Would Spinaker polish the inside or leave it as is -- rough finish?

I like it rough on the inside. It kind of grips the peppercorns while you are grinding them. Kind of like the M&Ps made out of lava but it cleans up easier when you use wet ingredients. I have always been a little squeamish about the lava ones as I never felt like I could get them very clean.

Spinaker would likely electrocute in some crazy bathewater, oil it in the KBQ, run over it with his truck then polish it with horse hair to fry an egg.

If you get one and use a few weeks you should be able to draw an accurate conclusion. Otherwise you could spend the rest of you life wondering.....

My wife and I have used that site for years to purchase some pretty nice products. EVERYTHING we have ever bought has been good beyond our expectation. It is difficult to navigate through though. I just discovered another page on there with a bigger variety of Mortats and Pestles. Some of these are REALLY cool but spend. But like all cast iron it is a buy it once in your lifetime deal.

Yeah, that's a great looking mortar and pestle. I completely second your comment about products from Pleasant Hill Grains. Always surpass the expected quality, and will last forever.

That's what we use these days!

For those who do salsa the molcajete is able to take it to another level. Especially for the wet herbs and veggies. It opens up a whole new taste profile.

Interesting thread. I have a mortar/pestle somewhere tucked away in a cabinet. Haven't used it in a long while. I think it's ceramic or maybe porcelain. Last time I remember using it I was trying to grind peppercorns and it didn't go very well. It was particular about how many peppercorns you put in it. Too many and it was hard to grind. Some would be ground into powder while others were just cracked in half. Impossible to get a consistent grind. If you put just a few in it did much better but if you needed more than a teaspoon you'd be at it for awhile. Seemed to work well the few times I used it for fresh herbs though.

So I bought a coffee bean/spice grinder for like $15 at Walmart. It has adjustable grind from coarse to almost powder. Works great and you are done in less than a minute and can have a couple ounces of cracked pepper. Drawback here is it has to be disassembled and throughly cleaned after each use otherwise everything after tastes like pepper.

I have a good quality pepper grinder that I purchased through the Spice House. It's a Vic Firth grinder and does very well. I've probably had it for five years now and gets used daily. Drawback here is if you need a good quanity for say a couple briskets you're wrist is going to get mighty sore from twisting that grinder!

Another option for me is if I know I'm going to need a good quantity a fresh ground pepper I can order it from the Spice House in whatever grind and quantity I need.

We use a little Krups coffee grinder for spices (dedicated so the carryover tends not to be important). Another good solution!

I got one from Mexico. The person that brought it back for me, her vehicle rocked from side to side when I took it out the car.

I took that sucker to the car wash first thing. I have a much smaller one for little jobs.
