I hAve the Amazen Tube that expands from 12 to 18 inched. It’s good for about 4-6 hours of smoke.

I have the 12" amazentube and it works great at adding a "heavier" smoke flavor. I personally don't think it's necessary (at least on my rectec mini). This type of smoking device actually adds acrid smoke rather than clean blue smoke, so if that's the flavor your looking for it will do as advertised.

Many people use these to smoke cheese and seem pleased with the results. Any idea why it doesn't impart and acrid flavor to cheese?

I use mine for cheese too. They work great, but if you've ever tasted it right out of the smoker you'd know they do impart an acrid flavor to the cheese. The cheese has to mellow for several days/weeks before it's tamed down enough to be enjoyable.

I just read that the smoker tube isn't a good buy for the Green Mountain Grill since the the fan just blows it out??

Don't know how it could blow it out unless it wasn't lit it properly. In the beginning, it burns with a flame (i use a propane torch to get it going) outside the grill/smoker, and you let that burn for about 5 minutes or until you get a nice bed of pellet embers going in the tube. Blow it out if it doesn't go out on it's own and then put it in smoker. Fan from pellet grill will just keep the embers burning, like blowing on a punk for the 4th of July

You really have to get them going before putting on a pit. Like Dr. ROK said, a propane torch works best.

I use the tube frequently with my GMG. Lay it right on the grates off to one side. No issues, does its job.
