Here's something I like about the Grill Grates: small stuff doesn't fall through into the charcoal!
For example, several times this summer I would grill something like pork chops, on the Performer 22" with Grillgrates, over direct heat. No flare ups, etc. Then I would follow the meat up with something like sliced up squash, asparagus, even Brussels sprouts. I would toss the veggies in a little olive oil and spice mix such as Bad Byron's Butt Rub, then toss them into the kettle. Using the grate tool, you you can easily scoop up even stuff that falls in the valleys of the grate, and toss it around while its cooking. Almost like stir frying. And we liked the grill marks the grates gave stuff like the squash and asparagus. The pork goodness still sizzling on the grate helped flavor the veggies some too.
I could never cook sliced up squash or zucchini on a normal grate like that.
Thanks all. I replaced my Weber genesis grates with the grill grates about 3 weeks ago. I also purchased the griddle to put on top of the grates. I made bacon on the first try and no flare ups as expected. Because my learning curve is steep (thanks to the forum), I'm just now settling in to cooking correctly. I'm not a fan of the grill marks on protein at this point so I've flipped the two grates on the left side to use for sear and put the remaining three grates ridges up.
jfmorris I agree with you. Small stuff has no where to go but on the plate. Veggies are definitely a hit with us!

warren012 , I think you'll find that Grill Grates, just as with many other BBQ accessories, are only good if they're used often and as intended. Those are the types of accessories I like the best--the ones that suit my needs. I keep my GGs on my gasser and at this point wouldn't think of using the gasser without them. I also have a Grill Grates Griddle and use it all the time as well for searing. I like it best for searing because it's easy to take inside and wash clean. The grease can really build up on it.
Sounds like you're getting good use from your set of GGs. Continue to enjoy.
I use two of them flat-side up for searing on my Genesis. They sit over the far left burner, plus the sear burner. They get plenty hot if you give 'em a minute, and they do control flare-ups. I don't see them as general replacements for whole grate.
I have them on my Weber Spirit 210, Weber Go Anywhere, Smokey Joe, Cobb portable, and a travel set that goes with me to demonstrate their awesome powers and potential to others. Are they worth it? They are the closest thing i'll ever have to having super powers. Gas grill owners take a hint. Chicken thighs. Set your grill to low, turn every 10 minutes, and finish on a higher temp using Dorothy Lynch Salad Dressing instead of BBQ sauce. Woodchuck Hard Cider as a pairing.
I love mine. On the gasser (which I recently gave away) much fewer flames and a smoother temperature. On the Kamados it balances out hot spots, and on the pellet grills, it allows me to sear and not lose asparagus and small items to the pellet gods. If you own them, give em a shot. Recently, Meathead's video with ChefSteps inspired me to sprinkle pellets on the GrillGrates for some smoke too. Not ditching them any time soon-
Hi, my name is Darrell. I'm an OTR truck driver for over 25 years. During my off time I love doing backyard cooks. I have a 48" Lang Deluxe smoker, Rec-Tec pellet smoker,1 Weber Genesis 330, 1 Weber Performer (blue), 2 Weber kettles (1 black and 1 Copper), 1 26" Weber kettle, a WSM, 8 Maverick Redi Chek thermometers, a PartyQ, 2 SnS, Grill Grates, Cast Iron grates, 1 ThermoPop (orange) and 2 ThermoPens (pink and orange) and planning on adding more cooking accessories. Now I have an Anova sous vide, the Dragon blower and 2 Chef alarms from Thermoworks.
I've got GG and really tried to like them, but didn't really experience anything that improved my food using on my Weber Performer and Summit gasser. However, I did use them on my pellet grill to try searing burgers and was able to get higher temps, but really don't use the pellet when I'm going to sear.

dshaffes . I've got a Summit gasser, and love using the GGs on it because it prevents the flareups I used the routinely experience. YM(apparently)V . I never did like flareups. Don't like the surprise of them, and don't like the burnt grease flavor they can sometimes impart. GGs made that a thing of the past for me, and that's why I like them.
I have heard that the grill grates work well. Never tried them myself. I however can tell you that the Sear Daddy works great on most brands of Pellet Grills.
I got the Grill Grates for my Weber Kettle 22". I use them like a big grill pan. I like them for grilling skinless boneless chicken breast and veggies a staple meal in this house for me and my wife. They work well for that cook, high heat but no flare ups to burn things. I just got them so I haven't used them for searing steaks yet but plan to do that to see what they do. I would like to try searing chicken wings at some point too. Here's some pics of cooks I've done since I got them.
Direct, medium high heat for Wings, on either charcoal or gas with Grillgrates. They can take it with the Grillgrates, and get nice crispy skin. I tried smoking once indirect, then tossing on the gas with grill grates. Smoking made the skin tougher and chewier, didn’t come out as well.
