Years ago I bought a grill with cast iron grates. Pure rusting junk. Then I bought a grill with porcelain coated cast iron grates. Just as bad. I learned the hard way. I have several BBQ tongs that are really substandard and i should get rid of them. HHHmmmm maybe today.
And I am like Kathryn "My next stupid BBQ accessory is just over the horizon"!!
The absolutely worst waste of time and money, not to mention ribs and charcoal, was a cheap Brinkmann offset smoker from Home Depot. The ribs at one end would burn, while the ones at the other wouldn't cook. Had to continually move them around to cook evenly. The ribs came out dry, even though I kept a pan of water over the coals. Wish I had known about this site before I got that piece of.
Those bear claws...yep. Totally useless. I get way more action out of 2 forks. Only upside is my kids think I look like Wolverine with them. So there's that...
Brinkmann "R2D2" style smoker. It was a total POS even if you knew what you were doing (I didn't). Thin, cheap metal, thermometer had only a vague "low-med-high" which read wrong and the overall design was bad. You had to take the whole thing apart to add more coals and / or water - which you were constanly doing because when you added water or put the water pan back in after adding fresh coals the water usually sloshed out into to the coals. I still use the coal and water pan for putting my chimney coal starter on, but that's it.
Scotch: Current favorite- The Arran (anything by them), Glenmorangie 12yr Lasanta, sherry cask finished. The Balvenie Double Wood, also like Oban 18yr, and The Glenlivet Nadurra (Oloroso sherry cask finished) among others. Neat please.

I keep trying to think of the worst thing I've bought for BBQ tools.. The only conclusion I've come to is I have 3 or 4 useless grate scrapers. I see a nice one hanging on the shelf, and I get it. It ends up not being a wide enough scraper blade to successfully scrape the expanded metal diamond holes. Most scrapers will work on exp metal in one direction, but not going the wide direction, or against the grain, they catch. (those with these grates will know what I'm saying). I see another one with a nice wooden handle that is seemingly wide enough so I get it, and it's not. So I have several scrapers that don't work how I want them to. I need a real wide one and am too lazy and gun-shy to go look for another.

True on the grill scrapers! I went through several before I surrendered and just get one of those weber wire brushes shaped like T at the end. They only last a month or two, but I have made peace with the issue. Oh- another worst buy accessory (technically): Dale's famous sauce - I think it is found nearly everywhere. A few guys in the office were talking it up and I marinated some skirt steak in it. It was good if you like soy sauce with liquid smoke. Horrible. Maybe was operator error, but something about me and a ten foot pole.
