I finally got around to building my sawbuck yesterday. Luckily, I have several varieties of trees on my property, so I cut most of my own smoking wood. This sawbuck allows me to pile in the wood, tighten the ratchet strap, and start hacking off short pieces from each end of the pile. Then I can make two cuts on the inside of the main supports and have wood for the fire pit. This is way quicker and safer than my previous method. I buried the legs for stability.

Jerod Broussard I cut off about 4†at a time to split into chunks for my smokers (Primo XL and AKORN). Once it get enough chunks, I will cut the rest in longer lengths for the fire pit (and possible another stick burner).
The ones in the photo are a little shorter, as I am sharing some pecan with some friends and co-workers. A couple are just starting to add chunks to their grills and requested some smaller chunks.
So tonight, while I am taking my first stab at pastrami, I will enjoy some Beam and Coke, while I use the hatchet to make some small chunks. I am starting with 10 digits on my hands…hopefully I will still have 10 tomorrow.
