It will be a while, but the standard has been adopted and is now available to manufacturers. It is supposed to have 4X the range and 2X the speed of Bluetooth 4.2. Maybe the thermos with 5.0 will actually be useful.
Bluetooth 5 may or may not really have a dramatic impact in devices like remote read thermos. Bluetooth has a number of classes available to the spec. One of the key distinction/factors is the transmitter power. Higher transmitter power means greater range. Higher transmitter power tho means more power consumption. Which means changing batteries more often.
I don't think ,most people would mind having to change batteries more often if it means they can actually read their thermo on the opposite side of their house.
Bluetooth 5 doesn't change the laws of physics of the 2.4ghz band tho and Bluetooth devices will still have issues once you put walls, bookshelves, etc. in the way.
Eunice and I live in a Rambler built in 1950, wood frame with Plaster Interior Walls, resided with Steel Exterior Siding! Bluetooth Devices won't work reliably regardless of Distance! Maverick ET 733 does work from the Deck to the Kitchen Table! The FireBoard with both Bluetooth and iCloud Capabilties
seem to function fine! The iGrill does not!
