Vitamix ... pricey but worth every penny ... (I've got the 5200 Standard model)

We smoked a couple of those grinding horse radish a few years ago. I wish I could find the picture of my wife wearing swim goggles and doing that, think Gene Wilder in Young Frankenstein

I do horseradish with a countertop-mounted hand grinder. And Gene Wilder goggles, btw ;-)

Ninja is great. We make everything from smoothies to BBQ sauce to grinding spices for rubs. Pretty versatile and tough with a few nice accessories .

I like the BlendTec. Love the newish Twister Jar. Used it yesterday to make the mashed cauliflower.

I have a newer Oster. We beat it with ice often. Make sure that the connection between the blade and motor is metal. The black & decker one we got was plastic and died a horrible death.

I have one too. Not bad, but not great. Doesn't grind ice down fine enough for me.

Thank you all for your responses! This is for a Christmas gift for my son.

#1 had heard great things about the Vitamix. She went to a hair appointment via Costco. She was kinda liking the Ninja, and called me. She was telling me she liked the Ninja accessories when the Vitamix salesman explained to her the world according to Vitamix.

Soooooo, long story short, she bought two. Apparently we also had an urgent need.

so, MBMorgan and Cheef Costco and Vitamix thank you!!

Congrats on the Vitamix decision ... you won't regret it. Only one caveat: The recipe book that comes with it is pretty bad. We eventually gave up on it and went back to "normal" recipe sources. FWIW, if you ever want to try soup, I've got an original tomato-basil soup recipe that I'll gladly share.

I have the Ninja. I like it a lot but a word of caution - I had to return my first one because the handle will break from the lid. I returned it to COSTCO and got another because I liked it's function. I make sure when taking the lid off I use my thumbs under the lip of the lid. If the handle breaks, the machine will not work. My daughter and her roommates went in together for a Vitamix. They spent that much to make nutritious foods. I don't think it has seen anything healthier than reduced sugar margarita mix. For that, she says it's the best machine in the world.

I bought my BlendTec a couple years ago mainly because I enjoyed the "Will It Blend" videos the company makes. I figure any company that engages in such a fun series of videos is a company I want to support.

Also, the BlendTec is a fantastic blender. I like it better than my sister's Vitamix but either one is a good choice.

Rich ... here you go (designed specifically for making in the Vitamix):

                  Vitamix Tomato Basil Soup
                  (MBM 2013 – 2014)
                  • One 28 oz. can Cento San Marzano Whole Peeled Tomatoes
                    • (No substitutes! … although Cento Plum Tomatoes aren’t bad if San Marzano can’t be found)
                  Or:
                  • Alternatively, use 1½ to 1¾ lb. fresh tomatoes (approximately 4 to 5 baseball-size)
                    • Cut into quarters or large chunks
                    • Trim away stalk and any hard spots
                  • 1 tsp Kosher salt
                  • Approx. 4-5 Tbsp. sugar (depends on how sweet the tomatoes are)
                  • 24 grinds black pepper
                  • Fresh basil
                    • All leaves from typical 2 oz. pack ... just rinse, twist them off, and toss them in
                    • Or dry basil as an alternative - 4 tsp
                  • 2 - 4 Tbsp. sun dried tomatoes in oil
                  • 2 - 4 Tbsp. roasted red pepper
                  • 2 cup vegetable or chicken broth
                  • 1 cup milk
                  • Process on high until light steam … turn off Vitamix
                  • Taste and adjust seasoning (normally sugar)
                  • Process on high until heavy steam
                  Enjoy! ... it's become something of a cool-weather staple around here ...
