    ThermoWorks Smoke question

Anyone know if the new Smoke has any restrictions for long cook's outside in cold weather? could not find any info on web-site.

They say that the operating range is 32 to 122 degrees F. They say the same thing about the ChefAlarm ... but I've used mine below freezing with no issues so far.

I just ordered a Smoke based on Meathead's review. It sounds like it is easier to use than my Maverick 632. I am really happy with my Thermapens so I look forward to receiving it.

I have not used a Smoke in sub-freezing weather yet but I have used my Mavericks in the dead of winter, plenty in the negative degrees F, and they ran like champs. The excellent build quality of the Smoke would lead me to believe you'll have zero issues. Sometimes the LED digits are slow to react on the unit that's outside, but it shouldn't affect any actual performance.

I'll let you know in a couple of months.

Usually the base unit is close enough to the cooker that it's warmed up a bit. You likely have nothing to worry about.

            My thought as well.

Rather than regular AA's using the lithium AA's will help in cold weather as they function/hold voltage in much colder temperatures.

I just got my Smoke in last week, and it is awesome. Knowing electronics for my living, I would say the only thing you may have an issue with is the LCD display slowing down. The temperature reading and radio transmission would not be effected. Also, even if it is freezing outside, keep in mind the base unit will be right next to your grill, and some radiant heat will help out the display.

Used my Smoke for the first time yesterday - so simple - love it. I have an older Traeger with a front side pellet hopper which serves as a shelf. I will sit the Smoke base unit on the hopper lid and expect that the temperature will stay 20 or more degrees over ambient and in most cases I suspect there would be a similar affect. It seems pretty heavy duty and one must realize that specifications always err on the overly conservative. I'm not worried.

Seems like this will be as good a post as any to ask functional questions about the Smoke.
              So here's mine.
Doing some ribs on the WSCGC, I have the alarm temps set pretty tight to what I want (Target 225°, alarms set for 210°-235°). The question is can I mute the audible alarms on the thermometer but still have them active on the receiver?

Now you need to see what happens when you get an alarm on the receiver and you press the power button to silence the alarm - does that also silence the alarm on the transmitter? Would be a neat/useful trick if it did.

That one I already know the answer to. No, it doesn't, you have to silence both alarms on their own respective devices.

That's too bad. That would be a useful thing for the remote to be able to do in case one forgets to turn the volume down on the transmitter itself.
