    Any Recommended Spice Jars?

I thought I would ask here, as I am looking on Amazon as I wait on Yvonne during her cataract surgery, for spice jars. I think I want something in the 3-4 oz size, glass, but wonder how well the lids seal on all the random things I am seeing on Amazon.

I mostly want them to store some of the bulk spices I bought in Turkey, but also to double for use with some spice mixes or rubs I might make. So maybe I want 3-4 oz bottles for individual spices, and 4 to 8 for rub mixes? I usually store the rubs I make myself in mason jars, but they always tend to clump up, which makes me wonder how tight a mason jar that has not been sealed by the canning process really is. Maybe I need some of those plastic lids for mason jars, instead of using the normal ring and top that come with the jars?

    Any advice appreciated.

I went around and around about it for a couple years. Finally, I bought the 3.5 ounce canning jars from Ball. Cheap, they stack nice, seal well, and my label maker got some use. Since I store my spices in a pull out shelf in my lower cabinets, I ended up labeling the lids.

Ha! Thought I had a pic around somewhere. This is row two of two. I alphabetized them. I have bigger jars for stuff that takes up more than 2 of the small jars.

I like Weck jars because they're all glass except for a rubber seal. No plastic nohow. I pick them up at Hobby Lobby.

I like the tulip design, and use them for my rubs and specialty spices

      They come in different sizes.

I haven't tried these, but they might do what you want:

        Vacuum lids:

Lid sealer: (Link does work for me)
        https://www.amazon.com/s?k=vacuum+sealer+for+canning+jars&crid=3D3LRXFVK6 T5R&sprefix=vacuum+sealer+for+canning%2Caps%2C126& ref=nb_sb_ss_p13n-expert-pd-ops-ranker_1_25

Edit to add you can buy 4 oz jars.

I have that top sealer. It works.
I used it to seal my jar of kosher salt, and it stayed non clumpy and I had a hard time prying it off, without bending my lid.

Those look interesting, RonB . I get tired of Mason lids rusting after a single use.

Mine rust if I run them through the dishwasher a few times.

Oh, interesting. Seems that with spices, especially oily ones, you should actually use the stainless steel lids with either a removable (food safe) rubber or silicone gasket.

Other advice was don't fill up the jar all the way, so the spices don't touch the gasket. Luckily, I haven't.

Looks like there's replacement lids from Ball (as well as others) for the purpose of long term storage.

fzxdoc good call! I'll be ordering those today. Hope my labels peel off ok.

Edit: Kinda expensive! Maybe I'll just grab some silicone lids. They seem more reasonable, and probably easier to take on and off.

Ok - I like all the options I am seeing so far! Keep them coming!

I do see that the non-canning lids Ball sells are metal with a silicone gasket. I am now thinking I may go with the small half pint jars and those type lids. I would not mind some shaker bottles of some sort though...

I may pop into Hobby Lobby since they have some canning supplies and the other jars that Kathryn fzxdoc recommends, and see what they have, before ordering anything from Amazon.

I am kinda leaning at the moment towards the 4 oz Ball "jelly jar" size - which would take an airtight standard size lid. They are only 3.5" tall and should fit upright in a standard kitchen drawer. They have some nice mini mason jars for storage, but the lids for those do not have an airtight seal.

I use these, they are salt & pepper shaker size, inner lids mostly work but the holes are too small for most of the spice mixes I make. The metal lids work fine and seem to seal maybe 90+% (with my smoked pepper salt you can faintly smell smoke and peppers with the lids cranked down) This specific brand is no longer in stock, but I suspect they are all pretty much made at the same handful of locations.
