    Bread Storage

For those of you who bake bread at home, what do you use to store your bread after baking to keep it fresh while you eat it. I'm not asking about freezing, rather do any of you use a bread box, bread bags, ziplocs, plastic wrap, ??????

    Very interested in this.
In Florida, there is too much humidity and everything molds if left on the counter.
In the fridge, it just gets hard and stale.

What have you found to be the best way to store homemade bread? I usually make two loaves that last up to two weeks. They stay pretty good, I’m looking for any tips or suggestions on keeping them as fresh as possible. Info on bread boxes, bread bags, linen vs cotton vs plastic all have reviews all over the place.

In our kitchen remodel, we put in a bread drawer (sheet metal lined). Have not had an issue yet with moldy bread.

Ok, all tried and true ideas. I envy those in low humidity but in Florida it’s either the fridge (yuk), or the freezer which is not convenient and limited space. We are learning to make bread, rolls, etc. but often end up throwing it away.

Why hasn’t anyone created an electric breadbox to keep it at the perfect humidity?
Can’t seem to find one, but it would be a seemingly simple appliance that would sell.
Fan, very small heat source, vent, Humidity and temp controls.

See if you AC has humidity control. Set the level accordingly. I keep my house at 55%. I do it mainly to help prevent mold and to help preserve sensitive electronics.

Yah, no. My AC is not even a heat pump. Had one of those fancy AC units. Variable speed fan, all the bells and whistles. Motherboard blew - over $2000 and still not fixed after two days swapping parts. Ripped it out, fired the people who were working on it, and bought a simple compressor with heat strips. 😎

Wrapped in a Terry cloth in a bread box if not using. Usually bake a loaf a day and that's what our family of 6 eats in 24 hours (usually). For that bread it stays wrapped un a Terry cloth on a cutting board.

Isn't that what microwaves are best suited for? Got any bread, flour tortillas, pound cake? Check the microwave.

We make a loaf or so a week. Typically just place in a very large freezer bag, leave the bag open so it can get some air and leave on the counter.

              Exactly what we do too.

Thank everyone. Seems like the right answer depends on how fast you eat it, where you live, and personal preference.

jlazar Have you tried a portable dehumidifier for your kitchen? We use those in the basement at church and they have completely changed how it feels down there!

J-Melt Let me give a little background on why I was asking the question. We make a loaf about every 5-6 days. There is just the two of us so it doesn't go in 2-3 days. We wrap it in plastic wrap and unwrap and use the slicer to cut the bread when we want a piece. Have not had any issues with the bread getting moldy or dry until it nears day 6.

Lately, the height of the end product has been such that it takes two sheets of plastic wrap to cover the top and sides completely. Not a big deal, just a little hassle in having to rewrap.

I was wondering if something like a linen bread bag would work just as good and keep the bread fresh for 5-6 days. Was hoping it would be easier and quicker after cutting the bread, to put the loaf in a bread bag and position it once closed so that the cut edge is down against the counter. Is this worth trying or should I just stick with the plastic wrap.
