Any idea how to clean this?

It’s mildew. It looks like smoky grease, but it’s mildew.

I hit it with Dawn Power Wash, I hit it with bleach and a toothbrush twice, and I’ve run it through the dishwasher twice on the pots & pans cycle. It is MUCH better than it was, and probably repeated attacks with bleach is the answer, but man. PITA. The bleach attacks were diminishing returns; the first one worked really well, but the second one didn’t.

Maybe just replace it, mold isn't worth messing with and yours is fighting you badly.

I’d give this a shot. Spray it and walk away. Gets good reviews. I’ve never used it it myself, but Zep is usually good stuff…Mold and Mildew Cleaner.

Zep is bleach based. I’m using Clorox bathroom cleaner right now. Bleach is the #1 anti-mold and mildew product; deck and house cleaner is exactly the same as laundry bleach, a 5% solution.

I love Clorox Spray, works great. Not sure how you’re cleaning it, but I usually just spray it and leave on for an hour or 2, repeat as needed. If that’s not working, it might be beyond help.

May be worth a try to soak it in vinegar for a day or two.

Silicone surfaces are porous. I would first just boil it. Once boiled then brush with a baking soda and vinegar solution, let sit for 5 or so minutes and then rinse. If any stain persists then it is time to use bleach to remove the color from the stain.

Maybe a gel formula would work if you let it sit?

Muriatic Acid won’t hurt plastics, but will burn anything organic. Highly volatile tho.

It is probably too late, but for future reference ammonia is good for dissolving grease. But, don’t mix bleach and ammonia since it will produce a deadly gas.

              I vote to replace it.

Agree! Then buy a protective mat for your mat……🥸

My experience with porous surfaces like that is that you can't get all of the mold out of it. You think it is gone, it looks clean, and then it grows back because the mold digs down deep and holds on for dear life. I'd call it a loss and get a new mat.

But yeah, there is a good reason Biofilms love porous surfaces in food processing environments.

Naw, it still works, it just looks like hell. I got all the time in the world to deal with it.

What about sitting it outside for a few days in the sun? A little UV might be what it needs...Last summer I took the foam out of a camper mattress and found mildew on it. One afternoon in the sun cleared it right up.

                  Chuck it.

The mat is on sale at Thermoworks right now for $10.20

I have 4 rectangular ones, and 4 round ones. It just offends my sense of thrift to throw it out. I’d rather spend $20 on cleaning products!

I LOVE Wet and Forget for stuff like this. You can clean it with one of the above products to get it clean now and a coating of W&F should last up to 10ish months.

I tried W&F on my pavers, no change. Good to know that stuff works on something! Maybe try it on my gross fish towels 😁
