    Ditched my cast iron grate for a set of GrillGrates

    Man, I loved my cast iron grate.

    Today its it's going to hit 60* here in NEPA. And I went out to the BGE to check everything, do a burn, etc. And the cast iron grate is all rusted, again. And it's in that pattern over the hot spot, where the seasoning always burns off.

    I started wire brushing it, again, and I was going to get the wire wheel and drill and goggles, and then I thought, screw this. Every freakin' year, sometimes twice or three times a year, I do this. And I got the freakin' thing specifically FOR those high temp grilling a that it doesn't hold up well to.

    I went on Amazon looking for a porcelain coated cast iron grate that would fit, and the suggestion came up for the GrillGrates, which I've heard good things about and I know a couple kamado owners who use them and like them. So, goodbye, cast iron grate. Sorry to see you go, but your 19th century solution for a thousand year old problem has been eclipsed.

    Mosca - I hear ya, Buddy! I've lived mostly south of the Mason-Dixon where it's humid most of the year. Cast iron grates used to sound real nice until I had to maintain those things. They were expensive, rusted overnight, were brittle, etc. Not even a trophy wife is worth that much effort!

    Grill Grates is a MUCH better solution and a lot more cost effective!

      Good move Mosca ...

      GG are very effective and require very little work. Try grilling some fish on those grates. Talk about easy peasy.👌

        You commented on another post about doing eggs on the back side of GG. How does that work? Small holes don't bother?

        If your grates are hot enough they won't run through the holes in the grate. However if you want sunny side up eggs on you grill grates cover them with heavy duty aluminum foil and cook away.👍

        Cast iron is highly over rated. Thin wire grates and Grill Grates are far superior.

        I have had my GrillGrates for a couple years and they have been used alot on my Weber Kettle. Great product!! Will be getting them for my new Good-One Open Range (firebox side) when it arrives.

          GrillGrates are perhaps the single best tip I've gotten from AR--and I've gotten tons of great tips from AR. I now mostly use the GGs flat side up. Makes a great sear on the entire surface of a steak that's been warmed up already--my go to for warming is sous vide. I know, I might be a commie.

            There are a few of us commie's on AR now. Some are holding back on using the hot tub method but they will eventually join us.😏
