iCelsius - looking for hands-on comments

The receiver from one of my 732s just died so I need to replace it with something. The Mavericks are obviously great for what they are, but the RF cuts out in the bedroom and doesn't ever reach to my mancave (both on the other side of the house from my grills). I can't imagine that Bluetooth would be any better (and it's probably worse). So looking for WiFi. Tappecue's no good since there's not always convenient power available (my grilling/smoking area has been moving around the property looking for the perfect home). So I think that leaves the iCelsius.

Who's got one and how do you like it, particularly if you have the dual BBQ probe.

I have one that was given to me. Not much great things to say about it, other than it hasn't caused me any problems since I stopped using it.

The dual BBQ probe I have now is an obvious upgrade aesthetically, however no good as for as function. The temps jump way up and down the WHOLE time. Meat temp jumping up and down, go figure. Can't get the whole graph on Android.

The first dual BBQ probe gave out, big time. Hadn't done 1/100th of what my Mavericks have done.

Jerod Broussard what is the brand name, so we can avoid it. My Igrill probes are starting to act up, so I am in search of a reliable Bluetooth unit with dual probes. Any suggestions?

He's talking about the iCelsius, which is what I asked about. For Bluetooth, you may want to look at the Maverick et-735. Actually has capability for 4 probes.

Thanks Jerod Broussard. I began to assume that it had problems since it hasn't taken off and I've seen few comments here over the past year. Really want WiFi. Hate to buy a thermostat unit just to get a thermometer.

Meathead mentioned on the main site that Thermoworks may have something coming down the pipe early this year.

I did a lot of reading yesterday about Bluetooth and Wifi (and RF) trying to find out a solution (was hoping there'd be a Bluetooth or RF repeater, like there's a Wifi extender, but there's not), so now I have a better understanding of what the options will likely remain and why.

The big deal about Bluetooth 4.0 is that it's low power emission and it works in such a way that it goes into sleep mode when it's not actually transmitting data. So it's a great option for battery-powered devices. As for distance, a Class 1 bluetooth device, which the 735 is, can have the capability to transmit up to 300 feet. However, cell phones are all apparently Class 2 devices, which are limited to 32 feet. (I sent a message to Maverick to find out how anybody could get 160 feet as advertised.) Bluetooth, like Wifi, shouldn't be limited by things like walls, etc. (which is proven out by the fact that my girlfriend's iPhone in the house will connect with my car in the garage and stay connected for a brief distance while I head down the driveway).

Wifi on the other hand requires more power, so I expect that the transmitter/thermometer will always require a plug or have short battery life, which limits its value for long cooks.

Then I found that Maverick does show a wifi device coming out sometime this year ("Available early 2016") - the Digital Chef WiFi Cooking (or Roasting) System (ET-736). Limited info on their site, but also found a catalog that includes it (on page 12). Appears to be made more for inside, but usable outside. Downloads & stores recipes from the internet, shares to Facebook and Twitter. 4 hours on battery or use the plug.

So now I understand why I can't have what I want. Unless I build an outdoor cooking area with electricity (or run a long extension cord in my backyard), I'll be limited to sleeping in the living room if I want to be safe during an overnight cook.

I have a variety of BT devices, including both an original iGrill & an iGrill 2, and all are affected by what's in between the transmitter & receiver. Line of sight they're great (over 100' often), but through the walls of the garage even 20' can wind up having some drops. FWIW, I really like the iGrill 2 (at least when used with an iOS device, I've had worse luck with iDevices products with Android phones). 4 probes, charting, presets, etc. LE so doesn't run out of battery. I leave an old iPhone stuck in a charger base dedicated to it while in use. Only feature I wish it had was cloud monitoring (not sure why it doesn't since the app is fairly cloud-centric).

I am using my new iGrill II and the pit probe is the pitts, up to 24*higher than my Diga Q, just not acceptable. I'm going to check on warranty, other than that it's ok not real happy with the graph capability to save review etc.

JohnF -- iDevices moved the graph/save features in their new app, so they are definitely not as easy to use (IMO) as before, but I can still send CSV files to myself when I want to keep a log. Interesting about your probe issues, though. Fortunately that's not something I've experienced.

I purchased a ET-732 as my first venture into a cooking thermometer, and I liked it. Then I discovered the Heatermeter and never looked back.

If you're thinking of ever adding a BBQ controller to your setup, this is the way to go in my opinion. It's a computer that controls a fan and servo to maintain the temperature of your pit while monitoring Pit Temp, and 3 meat temperatures. It also outputs a very nice web page with graphs and things. Hooks to your WiFi and can be controlled remotely. I have no issues running my pit while I'm at work. I can log in and change the temp of my pit from there. It also has very elaborate alarm capabilities.

It can even be used to control a solid state relay + immersion heater for doing a Sous Vide setup.

The down side is, it does require being plugged in all the time. But I think the good outweighs the bad in this case. For me anyhow.

It's an open project. You can solder it up yourself if you wish, or people on the forums are willing to make them up and mail them to you.

We have the ET-735 in testing right now and we are having issues with the probes (testing is done by an electrical engineer on precision instruments). Wait til we post our final review. We are NOT fans of Bluetooth therms. We still prefer the tried and true ET-732. Also, we have had issues with supply and support on the iCelsius.
