    Dawn Grill Barbeque Cleaner $40/bottle?

I was just browsing the list of things to buy at http://amazingribs.com/BBQ_buyers_gu..._cleaning.html and the spray cleaner is $40/bottle? Is this really worth the amazing price? Has anyone used it before? I usually take this site's recommendations, but dang that's a lot.

To clean my grills, I just do a high temp burn after just about every cook. I can't imagine what a $40 bottle of Dawn could do that 20 minutes at 600° can't do. I also use drip pans on all low-n-slow cooks that could be greasy. I cook on kamados.

If I cooked on a pellet pooper it might be a different matter.

I have a hot water drain pain that I use to soak my grates after a cook. Was $12 at Lowe's. I took a freezer bag and cut a corner off and used it to block the drain hole. I use Dawn and heat a large pot of water. I can get 4-5 grates in the pan and soak them over night. The next day I take a green scratch pad and easily get the grates clean.
Using Dawn but not the $40 version

There's some comments on the Amazon page that this has been discontinued for a while, so lack of supply is driving up the price. But not for me @ $40 !

There's also some discussion that Dawn Power Dissolver is the same product in a different container, but that it is only available now in their industrial channel. Individual bottles seem to be almost as highly prized (read "expensive") as the other product.

I bought a bottle of the Dawn Grill Cleaner, and it was about that price last year. But I bought it to spray inside the top dome of my Egg to help loosen up the creosote built up on it. It works great for that, and I haven't done it this year, but will do it again in the spring.

Any good quality detergent will do the same thing as Dawn. They are all in a class of compounds known as Surfactents … Surface Active Agents. There's no big mystery with Dawn.

DJ DeSpain - to remove the creosote from the domes of my kamados, I've always done a nice high temp burn or I've crumbled up a handful of aluminum foil and rub the inside of the dome. Both have always worked well for me. I'd worry that by using detergent that some residue would soak into the ceramic and foul some future cooks. I'm glad it worked out for you. Here's to more great cooks on your Egg. My intro to kamado cooking was on an Egg. Great cookers.

I wouldn't pay $40 for grill cleaner even if it came with an intern to do the work for me. If Meathead recommend it it's gotta be good though.

Ha ha! But it's a couple nice bottles of wine, or cases of beer.
