    Janmado jo SloRolller

Just bought a SloRoller for my Kamado Jo Classic. In setting it up I noticed that there are now only about 6" clearance from the center vent hole in the dome down to the grate. This seems like an awful small space like when you want to cook a couple or three f Butts. It seems like the dome ceramic will only be an 1" or 2" from the butt.

Has anybody had a problem with this and if so, how'd you solve it???

PS: I may be in the wrong forum. If so please feel free to either move it or tell me, and I'll post it correctly.

    Thanks , guys,

    Backpacker

I use my SloRoller in the Big Joe and would say that you are probably getting something wrong in your setup. I would watch a Youtube video to see how others are setting up. It should go charcoal basket, then SR, then your divide and conquer system, then the thingy you put your deflector plates on, deflector plates, drip pan, grill grates.

      HI Hoovarmin,
Thanks for the reply. Mine is set up per the diagram that came with it. How much above the grilll cover gasket does your grate set? mime is about 2½".

Backpacker Brown I'll go out and see when I get home from work this afternoon and let you know. PS if you put the @ symbol before someones screen name with no space betweenin your post it will notify them that they have a post to respond to.

Hey Hoovarmin, I followed your advice but unfortunately there's slim pickin's in YouTube. What I did see is that the divide and conquer ring sits about 2" above where the grill grate sets with the normal grate in place. How about yours? Does your grill set at the same height as with the SloRoller as it does when you have the regular Divide and Conquer ring installed.

I tried my SloRollerl system today and didn't see any difference in the smoke taste. I grilled a rack of St Louis ribs. Part of the problem is that Ididnt generate enough smoke. How about your system? Do you get an increase in smoke flavor? That's what I was hoping for when I bought the system.

      Thanks for your help,

      Backpacker

Backpacker Brown I've never used my KJ for low and slow without the slow roller, so I don't have any data to share about the difference it makes in taste. I do know that I love the smoke profile I get in my KJ and I always do use it. I typically use 4 big chunks of smoking wood buried under the coals. When I get home today I'll go through the setup and measure where my grates sit and get back to you

hoovarmin, I was just wondering. How do you light your charcoal? Do you put a starter pad in the middle of the charcoal bed or multiple starter blocks over top of each wood chunk. If you do use multiple blocks, how do you keep from overshooting the temp? I apologize for these little "nitty" questions but I'm trying to figure out how to get a good smoke for as long as I need it. I'm trying to figure out if the SloRoller is worth the $$$$ i paid for it. Thank you for you help.

Backpacker Brown Iike LA Pork Butt says, Smoking Dad BBQ on Youtube is pretty much the authoritative source on all things KJ. I use his methods of lighting. For low and slow I use 1 lighter cube, tumbleweed, or piece of paper towel crumbled up with some cooking oil on it. For hot and fast I use 4 of the same.

Try Smoking Dad on YouTube. He exclusively covers Kamado Joe with one specifically on the SloRoller.

It's pouring rain here right now or I'd go out and measure for you.
