    Best Smoker Probe

Just had a probe for my Maverick 732 fail. Tried placing in the oven as some recommend but no luck. Before ordering replacement probes, I was wondering if the Maverick 732/733 is still considered the best monitoring probe during the cook. Or have better options come out? I have a high end Thermapen for checking final temp.

    Timely question, jlazar!

I don't know the answer, just that it won't come from Maverick!

Here is another link for today you may wish to be aware of: https://pitmaster.amazingribs.com/fo...in-thermometer

How old is your probe? Maverick's customer service is excellent and there have been many folks who've gotten replacements from contacting Maverick about it. www.maverickhousewares.com The probes are a widely known weak point. I liken them to light bulbs- they may burn out tomorrow or they might run for 5 years w/o a hitch. I have an original probe that's 3.5 yrs old and works wonderful and I've had some months-old ones go bad on occasion.

If you have only a short distance to go, the Maverick ET 735 is a Bluetooth unit, has terrible range but that's Bluetooth's downfall. The probes with that unit are hardier. If wireless doesn't matter to you, then ThermoWorks has top of the line gear.

My probe is about 2 years old.

jlazar That's actually a pretty good run, especially if it's had heavy use. Lasted longer than some cheap grills do!

Up to the failure, I have never had a problem with the Maverick. I have run it side by side with the BBQ Digiq X2 and found them to be within 2-3 degrees of each other (both food and fire). Guess I will order a set of 6' hybrid replacement probes ($25). That gives me a spare and hopefully will give me another two years with the Maverick.

jlazar you can get a set of 6' Maverick probes (smoker and food) for only $33. I replaced my 4' ones after they got tangled up and pulled my transmitter onto my PBC which melted it. Fortunately Maverick replaced the transmitter for free after a phone call to customer service and sending the old one in with a letter of explanation. I'm impressed with the way they take care of their customers. Anyway, the 6' probes are much more user friendly and not much more expensive than the hybrid probes. Good luck!

Thanks. I had a set of the 6' for $33 and the one that went out was the smoker probe. Thought I would try the hybrid with are just $25 a pair. The hybrid allow you to use each probe as for either smoker or food. I will report back on how they perform compared to the dedicated food/smoker versions.

I have the Maverik and also the Thermoworks and the only problem with the Thermoworks is that it is not remote but it works flawlessly and is ruggedly built and the probes are first class. I even leave one of my Thermoworks probes outside draped over something and it is in the weather with rain or what ever and it still works great everytime I use it. I just wish Thermoworks made a remote model like the Maverik because I am sure the quality would be a lot better. I don't mind paying for something that lasts but I hate spending my money on something that does not last.

I too would willingly fork out the extra cash for a superior quality product. Come on Thermoworks, make us happy!

The BlueTherm Duo and the ThermaQ sure look like they have an RF kit available to make them wireless. Does anyone have these products? They are on sale today.

EDIT: Never mind on the ThermaQ... It looks like Thermoworks has a few options for RF monitoring but they are very expensive.

I just received the same today also. Will be interested to see how the "waterproof" works.

I was definitely glad to get the hybrid probes. Waterproof really helped me. Since I farm most of my smoking gets done in wet weather that took out a couple of my probes. That being said the reception issues people have, I can't say I've ever had. I live in a brick house and my bedroom is 80' away from my smoker and never any issue at all. I just put my transmitter in a ziploc bag and let it do its thing.
