    Meat Slicer for Italian Beef

Sorry if this has already been discussed but can anyone recommend a good quality meat slicer that will slice thin for Italian Beef? I’ve got a Warring (?) slicer that works pretty well but it doesn’t cut deli meats thin enough. Thanks!

I'm sure that other members will post recommendations for modern slicers. I use a mid-century American Slicing Machine - a commercial slicer that I bought on ebay. It can slice meat from almost see through to 1/2" thick. It also weighs about 90 lbs.

I use a 10” one from here https://www.kitchenwarestation.com/p...o-meat-slicer/ for slicing pit beef and cheeses. Well built.

I have one of these. I use it to slice bacon somewhere between the "normal" thickness and the "thick" cut, sliced turkey breast and sliced roast beef deli thin with no problems. Good, well built unit.

I have the Avantco 10 inch slicer from the Webstaurant store. It weighs about 50 lbs. if I were to do it over, I would go 12 inches. For more money I would also buy one with more angle. With that said, I really like what I have. I was going through the $100 slicers at a rate of once a year. Be careful about shipping costs. It was my initial purchase from them and shipping was free. Subsequent purchases were squashed because of astronomical shipping costs.

        Hey tbob4
Thanks again … what do you mean by more angle?

When you look at slicers they go from close to a 90 degree angle to almost 45 degrees. The closer to 45 degrees, the cleaner the slices and the more uniform the meat falls. I’m no expert, but I believe it has to do with gravity. I have used the angled slicers and they are just smoother. They are heavier and more expensive, though.

LEM products are really good quality. I have a LEM meat grinder and it is built very solidly.

If you ask me, I'd be either buying direct from LEM ( https://www.lemproducts.com/category/meat-slicers ), or finding the LEM model I want on eBay, FB Marketplace, or Craiglist. I think some folks here have picked up commercial-grade slicers for well under $100 off marketplace sites.

Meandering for my own research on a meat slicer within this group and wondered if you made a decision and how that is going. Any chance you could fill me? I'd appreciate it!

Does anyone have a LEM meat slicer? I'm looking at the Mighty Bite 8.5 inch model for around $250. It will only get light use, for my smoked bacon, mostly and whatever else I can come up with to play with. I've never made pit beef, for example, because it needs to be thinly shaved. That might be fun to try.

Breitzke was also wondering (see his comment in previous post).

My wife just got me one ( https://pitmaster.amazingribs.com/fo...85#post1350285 ), while not LEM, looks like it should be okay for light use. I will post some thoughts once I've had a chance to use it. I am hoping to pick up some top round/turkey breast sometime this week.

While you think your slices will get light use, once you get a quality slicer you start finding a lot of uses for it. I don’t have a LEM but if users say it is good and sturdy, I would get it.

fzxdoc Normally I would never suggest getting a smaller slicer but I would ask you to take a look at this 6” slicer because I believe it to be better constructed and uses less plastic than that particular LEM. The meat guide is metal, and has a handle to keep hands clear. This one is a 6” and will cut meat up to a little over 5 inches but has the same power of the LEM so no problems binding the blade. https://www.kitchenwarestation.com/p...ainless-blade/ While I own a lot of LEM equipment and like it, this might be a better buy for a few dollars more. I do own a larger KWS slicer and think highly of it.

I received a Beswood 10" meat slicer as a Christmas gift and used it to slice some left over prime rib for sandwiches. All I can say after the initial test drive is "Wow"! It beats the $99 models I have been using by an order of magnitude. Price on Amazon was $338 which includes shipping for Prime members. Over 80% of users give it a 5 Star rating which I think says something. Have fun!

I've thought about getting a meat slicer for quite a while. I just wonder how much of a pain it is to clean one. In the mean time I can slice stuff pretty thin with a good sharp knife.

My big one (see above) is so much easier to clean than my old $100 ones. The blade comes off with a safety and it and the carriage go in the dishwasher. Lysol wipes (followed by water) get it good and clean elsewhere. By removing the carriage and blade you find very few nooks. It IS heavy, though and the wife requires me to put it away instead of leaving it out waiting for the dishwasher to stop.

Like IdahoJim I hesitate to get a slicer because of the cleaning factor. Also I just don’t know where to keep it. Storage space in the kitchen is all used up.

I would check FB Marketplace, Craigslist, etc. Look for a used commercial unit like Berkel, Hobart, or Globe. If you are patient you will eventually find one for $250 or so. It might take a couple months of looking but one should eventually pop up and they are much better than the small home units if you plan on slicing stuff often. If it is just a couple times a year the smaller units will do the trick but if you expect to be slicing bacon, roast beef, cheese on a regular basis you will be glad you got a larger unit.
