A Deep Frying Basket That Works?!

I have this basket for use with my DO and I am unhappy.

Lodge Deep Fry Basket, 11.5-inch, Silver https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B000050AV6/

Both times I have used it, the handle has detached from the basket once it gets hot. I hammered it back into shape the first time but it did it again this time. I suspect being on the smoker at enclosed 400+ degrees does it versus being on a cooler stove top.

is there a better fry basket or do I suck it up with using tongs to move this basket after the handle falls off?

Can you get some ss wire and attach the handle with that?

I really like this idea. Cheap and effective and lets me take full advantage of the basket.

Do you necessarily need a basket that you can leave in while it cooks? Vs putting the food directly in the DO and use a spider strainer as needed to move them around and extract when done? https://www.amazon.com/Hiware-Stainl...dDbGljaz10cnVl

I am a deep frying novice so this may be a totally silly comment, but that's what I've done in my very limited experience

I skip the basket and use a spider similar to das85. I prefer the wire mesh ones myself, but the concept is the same.

Interested in this thread. Was looking at that Lodge basket. Camp Chef also has several options. I have also considered a larger deep fryer but just do not use enough to justify the cost.

I prefer using the spider to stir and pick up the the fried food. It doesn't always get done at the same time.

The spider strainers look interesting. Is it hard to pick stuff up off the bottom of the DO though? I am not clear if I’d have to cook less food per batch with the spider versus basket. das85 bmillin WI Bubba

I also think the SS idea is very good.

@ IFindZeroBadCooks No you don't have to cook less food at all. They make different sized spiders so you should be able to find one that fits your needs.

I find it very easy to pick stuff up off the bottom. Also easy to fish out little bits of batter that have broken off to keep them out of the way. I don't see why it would affect the amount of food per batch but again my experience is pretty limited!

I love spider strainers in general, use them all the time for taking pasta or potatoes out of boiling water too.

You don't have to adjust how much you cook. Just think of them as a big slotted spoon. You can scrape the bottom with them if you want, and the larger ones will get all your food out with just a couple scoops. Just make sure you don't get one bigger than the pot your cooking in.

Suck it up and get a real fryer.

I have toyed with the idea of a cajun fryer for years.

Yes sir these are the bees knees for frying! I don't own one personally but have used one a few times and if your cooking for a crowd these are awesome. I've used the double basket for cooking fish and fry's and I was able to cook everything at least twice as fast as normal.
