New Mexico/ Hatch Chile Festival Meat Up Pics

My plane arrived about 20 minutes early. This is a small airport and we deplaned via roll up stairs outside. It was pretty windy but the temperature was pleasant and the humidity was low.

Here is a view from near the runway where we claim our valet luggage.

Here is the airport. Lots of adobe architecture in this region.

I left the Airport in a rented Nissan Rogue and headed to The Pantry, a diner that has been open since 1948. There I had the Pantry Burger: open faced 1/2lb burger cooked medium with cheese, grilled onions, and green chile sauce. I decided to get the red chile sauce as well, the New Mexicans call using both red and green sauce Christmas style.

After this I went to the Institute of American Indian Arts( IAIA) Museum of Contemporary Native Arts and then walked through several shops around the Plaza. I walked by the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis de Assisi but it is closed on Mondays.

Next I went to the Loretto Chapel which is famous for its Miracle Staircase, a spiral stair case that makes two complete 360o turns without a center support. It was even featured on Unsolved Mysteries.

I killed a little time before dinner at The Bell Tower Bar overlooking Santa Fe from 5 stories up.

My final stop today before driving to Chimayo was to a James Beard Award winning restaurant called The Shed, open since 1953. The lady working the front told me that the Michelin Star people had stopped by a couple of weeks ago too. The Shed is famous for their blue corn tortilla chicken enchiladas covered with red chile sauce. Again, I was in the Christmas spirit but I will say that the red sauce is excellent. Served with posole and beans.

It started to rain while I was there and was pouring in Chimayo so no pics from there. I also saw that a tropical storm is about to hit my house while I'm gone.

You went to the places we did when in Santa Fe a number of years ago. The Shed was a little on the hot side for me, but good food.

Just checked the weather at my house which is where the larger gray circle by Beaumont is. My security cameras show nothing wrong other than the cover of my riding lawn mower blew off.

Luckily the wind shouldn’t be much of a factor but it looks like y’all are gonna get a lot of rain. Probably won’t get nuthin’ at my house, or very little.

According to the radar the worst of the rain has past us. I checked the surveillance cameras and there is no flooding in my yard so not much rain at my house. It is windy though, the trees are swaying pretty good.

I lost my camera feed but it appears to be an internet outage. The power company map shows that I should have power but a friend drove by and verified that the lights are on. I was a little worried about the fridges and freezers. The long trailing outer band is sweeping back over my area, hopefully no further issues will arise.

Internet is finally working at the Hacienda de Chimayo - the storm had knocked it out. There was flash flooding and debris over the roads last night but its cleared now.

Here is the Hacienda, taken from the restaurant parking lot across the street:

This morning I went to the El Santuario de Chimayó which was built around 1813-1816. It is famous for its healing dirt and there are hundreds of stories from people who say that they were healed here. No picture taking is allowed inside.

I bought a postcard that shows the inside of the Santuario:

During Holy Week, thousands and thousands of people walk to the Santuario de Chimayo. Good Friday is usually the day most people make the walk, some miles upon miles and others a bit shorter distance.

And your room looks nice! Very northern New Mexico!

Lunch at James Beard Award winning Rancho de Chimayo where I hurt myself eating.

Appetizers: Green Chile Stew and Queso. The stew was excellent and spicy. The queso is about the same as any TexMex place back home.

Click image for larger version Name:	rancho_de_chimayo2.jpg Views:	2 Size:	3.01 MB ID:	1881939

Main course: Combinación Picante platter which is a cheese enchilada, tamale, carne adovada, posole, and beans. You can get red or green sauce, or go Christmas which I did. Damn good! Rancho de Chimayo is known for their adovada made with the locally grown Chimayo chilies and this did not disappoint. I have their cookbook and I made this last year (I ordered some dried Chimayo peppers - hard to find) and I'm pleased that the recipe tastes just like theirs. Now to sleep off a food coma...

barelfly That is exactly what it is: goodness. They serve breakfast on the weekends, wish I could be here for that but I do have their cookbook so I can make breakfast at home after I return. I have some leftovers so I am about to partake in a second lunch.

I splurged. The Trujillo family has been hand weaving rugs and blankets for eight generations here in Chimayo. I decided to buy this rug. It is the style that was developed in Chimayo and, to me, represents the style that makes me think of New Mexico. I've seen this style all of my life but didn't realize that it originated in this area.

Great piece for you to take home! The art throughout the state is something! Rugs, pottery, jewelry, painting, sculptures…it’s truly a wonder to be able to see this and the influences based on the location!

I have arrived in Riudoso. I'm tired and I won't be going out tonight. I have leftovers from lunch so I'm fine for dinner.

I met Jeremy barelfly at El Pinto restaurant in Albuquerque for lunch. They have been open since 1962. I ordered the Red Chile Ribs which Food Network declared "the 3rd best ribs in the country" sometime in the past. They were really good but not smoked. However, the red chilies used in the rub and sauce gave them a smokey hint. I also got some Green Chile Strips - think french fries but with chilies instead of potatoes Also good as was the red chile ranch dip. I'll let Jeremy post his food pics and description.

Next, I stopped about an hour and a half down the road in San Antonio, N.M. at the Buckhorn Tavern for what is considered one of the best green chile burgers around. They even beat Bobby Flay during a Throw Down.

Had a great time with David today for lunch! I offered up a few spots to David to pick from, El Pinto and one of my favorite taco spots in town. The ribs caught his eye 😂 when he peaked at the menu, so that’s where we headed! Really enjoyed the time talking with David about his trip thus far and the food he’s sampled the few days he’s been here. Also enjoyed hearing about the Hill Country in Texas and some of the areas he visits now as well as a kid! Fun getting to know him a bit while enjoying my Chicken Enchiladas - Christmas style!

looking forward to Saturday for some fun in Hatch with David and Will perusing everything chile!
