    What about… Nashville?

Just thinking about other places to have meet ups.

Chicago? From what I’ve read, Chicago has fewer Chicago style (spares and tips) than they used to, and more transplanted Texas style, and the authentic places don’t offer seating, just carry out.

Memphis? Maybe. But also one of the first things in a Memphis Google search is a discussion about crime, and whether it’s bad or not. Well if you’re having the discussion….

Alabama? That’s a big state! South Carolina? North Carolina? I’d go back to NC in a minute, WayneT’s meetup was fantastic! Georgia?

Kansas City? Google “KC bbq tour” and there are a dozen companies offering bbq tour buses! Uh… thanks, I guess?

Idk. Nashville. Music. Arts. Bbq. Nashville hot chicken. There has GOT TO BE enough worthwhile places to eat killer food there, and support a couple dozen Pit members, right?

NashVegas could be appealing. I believe listening to Hank while grilling makes the meat taste better.

It's a shame the Nashville no longer has any real country music. That stuff they play today is awful. Gimme some Possum, The Man in Black, or The Hag.

I will be there later this year. That is one of the few big cities we really enjoy.

If we went to Nashville, I would want to plan a run up to Owensboro, Kentucky (about 1.5 hours) before I returned home to sample the mutton. It has always intrigued me.

The only one of the above options that might work for me would be Chicago. Would be fun, but obviously decide what's best for the greatest number of interested members.

NC would be good too, could visit family. Memphis would be interesting.

Huskee I looked at Chicago first, and I wouldn’t be against it, at all. It’s an easy drive for me, I have family there, and there’s a pretty sizable Pit contingent in that general part of the country. And Chicago is one of the great food towns of the US.

Depending on timing and my work schedule, count me in. Knoxville is just a little over 2.5 hours away

When I was in Memphis in the spring of 23 I spoke with a MPD cop about the crime there. He said if you stay within a 2 block strip of Beale St. you're fine. He said there's nothing to see outside of that anyway, and NEVER go beyond that at night. With that, we walked all around there for a day and there wasn't a bad vibe at all. I'm a very vibe-conscious person so I know about these things. Negative waves too.

DaveD agree on the rendezvous. Meh. And I like a dry rub rib…..

But wait, this is sounding very similar to the OG bbq conference from pre-C.

CaptainMike In all seriousness, I totally get it. A colleague of mine's late husband was a homicide detective and she has told me of how he would scan and stay tuned in to that very kind of thing, constantly. I have no doubt that many responders escaped a close shave by being alert like that.

I've been to Memphis multiple times. We've walked along the river at that nice park they have (during the day), AND we've walked all up and down Beale Street, from the Peabody where we stayed, and to the Rendezvous. I never felt unsafe, day or night. I try to practice situational awareness, and usually was with the wife and kids the times we've been, so I had them to protect.

The Gibson factory tour at their factory on Beale Street is worthwhile if you are into guitars at all, while in Memphis.

Great catch, Tom, that was my intention with that part of my comment! 'Ol Moriarty must have gotten the message cuz I heard he went on to be the captain of a cruise ship that specialized in positive vibes.

For me Chicago is just down the road so that would work obviously. But I would definitely be good with Nashville, Memphis, Kansas City, St. Louis, etc.
All in driving distance for me. Count me in!

The thing that blew me away was the cop in a box 30 feet up in a main intersection on Beal. Spent several hours at Elvis 20.

I was in Nashville recently. Is there serious BBQ there? I went to a place recently that was OK, but I don't remember the name so it wasn't memorable. It is 2 hours from me though

I will add that I was excited to see a Central BBQ near Vanderbilt when we were up there for a medical appointment last year, as I've heard of it as a place to go in Memphis through folks here on AR. I was disappointed in everything I got. Of course, it was 2 or 3pm on a weekday, and we were in between the lunch and dinner rush, but I would expect better than the dried out rack of ribs I got. And Yvonne's chicken was nothing special either.

I wish we could get enough Texas members together to charter a buss to Nashville. We could have a ball all the way there and back. I’d be willing to drive a ways to get to the buss. All the Texas group could pick a central location location to meet and get on the buss. I will personally ask the driver if we’re there yet every hour.
