Speaking with the wife we would like to attend one. We'll keep an eye on locations and dates. Jumping a flight isn't an issue.

We'll hang in there. I might have to be scheduled for jury duty since I had to get excluded for May as we are off to Kona for our 10 th anniversary and said Sept as we are camping all summer. They really didn't want me on a jury anyway, I'm the hangin judge.

Weber MT Kettle, SnS, DnG, Easy Spin Stainless Steel Grate, Elevated SnS SS Cooking Grate, Vortex, Cajun Bandit Rotisserie, Oklahoma Joe Bronco, OKJ Bronco Triple Grate, Mini Weber Kettle ashtray Maverick XR-50, TimeStick Trio
This was my second Meat Up. I had a great time with everyone. I strongly encourage everyone to attend a Meat Up when you can. It's great to put real people to their posted avatars. Thanks to everyone in attendance.
LA Pork Butt and I have agreed to get together and hit some of DFW's finest BBQ spots. First stop will be Panther City BBQ in Fort Worth. www.panthercitybbq.com I can't wait for that visit.
Also, a word of thanks to Uncle Bob and wife Lee and Panhead John for the Friday and Saturday night bourbon tastings. TxF wife Julia's bourbon reviews were quite informative. I wish I had taken photos of this event.
Thanks to David 58limited for his summer sausage and hot sauce. They were both great.
Thanks to Dean TripleB for his thoughtfulness in bringing the members his towel clip and towels. I'm glad that the TSA allowed this to be transported to our Meat Up.
If you can make J-Melt mini Meat Up in Chicago on June 1,2024, please do, I'm sure you will have a great time hosted by Josh.Last edited by Purc; April 22, 2024, 07:08 PM.

"Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy." ~Benjamin Franklin
I want to give a shout out to Dean TripleB for the thoughtful gifts he gave to everyone: A dish towel with a clip to hold the towel and attach to your belt or pocket, a perfect way to always have a towel available to wipe your hands on when barbecuing or when hitchhiking across the galaxy.Last edited by 58limited; April 21, 2024, 05:59 PM.

I didn’t take any pictures, there are plenty of pictures form everywhere we went. Julia and I meet Uncle Bob and Leah at the Burnt Bean on Thursday and Mosca and Sid P we’re about 5 min too late to slip inside with us so they got to the table about 30min later, J melt showed up later. Everything was awesome, only complaint was the sausage wasn’t sliced all the way through on my Brass Monkey and I had to do a bit of surgery before I could pick it up. Ernest one of the owners came by and talked with us for 10 or 15 minutes once the line outside disappeared.5
The Mexican food was solid, I believe Julia got the recommendation from somebody’s kid who goes to TX State.
On Friday we went to Leroy and Lewis in South Austin and had sandwiches. I’ve been playing with the Chopped Cheese the Chudd’s did a few months back and wanted to see how I was doing, and I couldn’t pass up a frito pie. Even Leroy gave us some samples of beef cheek and that pretty much made up my mind that the 2 places we had been so far were equals.
Barbs BQ was the place for Saturday lunch, the shaved lime zest on spicy pork ribs was interesting in a good way, everything else, brisket beans and turkey was as good as any we had had so far. Over all we decided it was the worst place we had had this trip and every place could be on the Texas Monthly top 5 list next time it comes out.
Overall I think this trip I had the best BBQ overall of the 5 trips I’ve made, it’s also nice that every place this trip I can probably work into a lunch stop every now and then.
The best thing was Julia and I only knew half the people that showed up, that’s the most since the first one where we didn’t know anyone. We all have more things in common than BBQ and it’s great to meet folks that seem like we have known forever.

“We all have more things in common than BBQ and it’s great to meet folks that seem like we have known forever.”
That was truly amazing! Until we began our conversations we were strangers. There was no insider group or old group and new group. For new and old alike it seemed as if we were friends our entire life.

Large Big Green Egg, Weber Performer Deluxe, Weber Smokey Joe Silver, Fireboard Drive, 3 DigiQs, lots of Thermapens, and too much other stuff to mention.
I have a lot to write as a postscript, but I want to take some time to organize it in my head.
HOWEVER. Tomorrow is grocery day, and I absolutely have to get a whole packer for the weekend. I NEED MORE BRISKET.

Came back to a hailstorm of issues on the Homefront plus getting caught up with work. Don't have anything more to add then what has already been posted. David (58Limited) and I ended our journey on Sunday on our way home. We shot south from the hotel and it took us right to the front door of Burnt Bean BBQ in Seguin Texas. We had a glorious breakfast to cap off a great week of barbecue, friends and a ton of fun.
This is the Casanova, our breakfast at BB. Consists of chopped barbacoa and brisket, crispy tortillas over the top with their own sauce, two large fried eggs sunny side up with crumbled cotija cheese, topped off with some Mexican creama. It was almost too much but capped off a perfect gluttonous week of the best barbecue, and food in general, on the planet !!

I’ve been fortunate enough to have attended all 7 of the MeatUps that have been put together so far, 5 in Texas, 1 in North Carolina and 1 in Louisiana. Picking my favorite is like choosing your favorite steak, my favorite steak is the one I’m eating now! Same applies to the MeatUps. As varied as the locations and restaurants have been, there’s always one thing that is a constant…the quality of the people and the friendships that have been formed. I’ve met some of the nicest, generous and friendly people there is! As great as it is forming friendships here on AR, it’s the icing on the cake to meet them in person.
The MeatUp this weekend was a little special for me, having so many first timers here, with many of them traveling a long distance. It means a lot to me having each of you go to the time, travel and expense of attending one of these, it really does…thank you! If there’s people here that have even the slightest interest in attending one, get off the fence and go! I promise you’ll love it! There’s already talk about our next one in October. It might seem early, but we’re already kicking around ideas about “possibly” a new location…stay tuned.Last edited by Panhead John; April 22, 2024, 09:22 PM.

You’re right, I forgot about the Bahamas MeatUp, what a location to have one! And also HawkerXP has put together a few camping MeatUps, long before the ones I mentioned above.

What a great time!! I got to scratch this off my BBQ bucket list - Eating Central Texas BBQ. Six BBQ joints in 2 days. Everybody has posted about the same pictures I took, so no use in reposting them. So, a shout out to the Meat-Up team, a few thank You's and my funny story.
Thank you to Panhead John for organizing this Meat-Up. My room was great and the shower water pressure better than at home.
Thank you to 58limited for the summer sausage that you bought. Coming in on Thursday and having not eaten anything yet for the day your sausage saved me. Double the kudos because that was some great sausage.
Thank you to Troutman and Uncle Bob for shlepping me around since I used Uber to get to the hotel and did not have a car.
Thank you to LA Pork Butt wife, Irene, for looking after me and making sure I was with a group each day.
Thank you to those above and to J-Melt, Mosca, Oak Smoke, Purc, pasmom, Sid P, TxF and his wife Julia, Uncle Bob and his wife Lee and anyone I missed for your comradery, thoughtfulness and friendliness to a CA boy who was far from home.
Thank you to texastweeter wife, Amanda, who at the Mexican restaurant gave up her silverware so that I could eat my dinner hot when it arrived (there was a shortage of silverware at this restaurant for some reason). Looking out for others at your expense is a rare trait these days.
And thank you to Mosca and Sid P for allowing me to tag along to the airport instead of taking an Uber.
And that is where my funny story begins. I am technology challenged (among other things) and did not look forward to having to navigate my app to get an Uber. Getting a ride to the San Antonio airport, sitting back in the car and enjoying the scenery is very relaxing and stress free. We got to the airport, said our goodbyes and went our separate ways. When I put my confirmation code into the kiosk, I got an error message. So, I went to the front Southwest check-in and gave my confirmation code to the attendant. She twisted her head, punched the computer keys, twisted her head again and then looked at me with concern. I asked her, "is everything all right". She replied, "you're at the wrong airport!". "You're flying out of Austin, not San Antonio".
I never asked Tom what airport he was flying out of and did not pay attention when we were driving. After taking an Uber 72 miles in the other direction to the Austin airport, begging people to allow me to move through to the front of the security check in and grabbing my stuff after going through the security x-ray, I ran with my belongings in hand (using one hand to hold my pants up) and barely made it to my flight on time.
I'm a focus on the good type of guy, so if I had missed my flight, I would have found something to be glad about. But since I did make it home, I got to snuggle with my wife and see my wisteria in full bloom.

J-Melt You could’ve gotten a tee shirt that read “Keep Austin Weird” if you had looked around. TripleB Wow I’m glad you had time to rebound and make your flight. That could have gone bad for you. I missed a connecting flight out of Houston one summer night and had to reschedule for 6am the next morning. I thought that wouldn't be much of a problem unit a security officer woke me at midnight to tell they were about to let the homeless people in at 12:30 to stay cool. That night got interesting in a hurry. I was awake until I boarded my flight home.

What an incredible experience this was. For those of you who haven’t ventured out to a meet up I couldn’t recommend it more. First my deep thanks to Panhead John for setting all this up. You should hang your shingle up as an event planner. Every thing was just right. When I arrived Thursday afternoon several people were setting around talking in a meeting area off the lobby. I was welcomed like we had known each other for years and instead of just listening to conversations as you would normally do in a new situation I was drawn right in. It just kept getting better from there. I’ll be much more specific in a post soon, but the plumber is due back in a minute to begin digging under my house looking for a water leak. This could get ugly.

Part of my goal for the time in Austin was to get some hiking in. Living in a midwest city, we have decent hiking within a 30 minute drive, but nothing as beautiful as the Hill Country. I am also an introvert and really wanted some good recharge time while I was not responsible for taking care of my kids. My goal was 2 hikes, but I found a way to get 4 in, one each day! Here are some pictures:
This first one was a park in San Marcos after the Burnt Bean:
On Friday I completed my goal of two hikes by hitting an LCRA Park on Lake Travis:
My third hike on Friday happened because I was a good 45 minutes early getting to Belton for my Sister’s engagement party. This one was at a park by the Belton dam:
My final hike was able to happen because church let out earlier than I expected. This one was a stroll down memory lane as I used to have lunch on Lady Bird Lake after church before going to work at Baby’s R Us.
Thank you Panhead John for putting this meatup together! It was a great excuse for me to get back to Austin to see my family for the first time in a year and a half. I am grateful to have met all of y’all and for experiencing comradere and great food!
