Houston Area Mini-MeatUp …….Booze And Wild Women Galore!

Well, the closest we got to wild women was when our hostess seated us…and David did have 1 beer. So…maybe a slight exaggeration. A few weeks ago on a post I’d made about fresh Gulf shrimp, 58limited Troutman and myself decided to get together for lunch in Seabrook and then go hit a fresh seafood market. Seabrook is about a 40 minute drive from me, it’s home to a place called Tookie’s Seafood Restaurant. Maybe a mile or so from there is a cluster of fresh seafood markets on Galveston Bay….there’s about 6 or so, most within walking distance of each other.

We all met up at Tookies around 11:15 today for lunch. Steve ordered 1/2 dozen oysters on the half shell and David and I ordered a plate of boudin balls as appetizers. The 4 large boudin balls were pretty darn good and came with a spicy dipping sauce. They put the boudin balls on my ticket and that bastard David didn’t split the bill with me! You owe me $4.50 David! Anywho, Steve and I both ordered a fried seafood platter which came with 2 catfish filets, 4 large fried shrimp, hush puppies and fries. Pretty darn good was our mutual opinion! David had an order of shrimp n grits and will probably post pics later.

After lunch we all made the 3 minute drive down to Rose’s Seafood for some take home goodies. smokenoob They had some Royal Red head on shrimp, $6.89 lb., so I bought a pound. I’ve never had them before so I’m eager to try em out one day soon. I also picked up a couple pounds of Jumbo shrimp, $8.59 lb. and a qt. of sea scallops, $14.99. Great prices and quality compared to the grocery stores!

It was a perfect day for a MeatUp!

Man I miss that about living down south. At one point I lived in West Columbia, and then later in life MacAllan.

texastweeter I spent very little time in bars there. I soon discovered that alcohol and macho make people in those hard to get along with. My hands kept trying to drag me to two different bars there. One was Jaguars and the other was Stilettos. If I understood right our hands spent so much time at Stilettos that they had a table reserved every night.

Oak Smoke Uh...stilletos was a ahem....gentlemen club in McAllan. Believe it was originally a mansion that belonged to a retired adult entertainment actor. I never went, but the fella above, RW, his girlfriend "worked" there.

I've never lived closer to the ocean in my life... and I've never had less seafood options in my life (seriously Colorado had multiple fresh seafood stores, and I'm like an hour from the beach and I have to drive 30 minutes to even find Oysters!). I'm quite jealous of you Houstonians, Houstinites, Houstoners...

Those red shrimp are pretty tasty and that's a much better price than what I got them for last time I found 'em

Houstonians would be the correct term…..🥸 That’s really hard to believe there’s no fresh seafood in your town, sorry to hear that Greg. And I’m really eager to try that Royal Red shrimp.

I got the Shrimp and State Grits. I was wondering what State Grits were, the description didn't really help: "Jumbo shrimp and Tasso ham sauteed in a seafood gravy served with butter crusted grits." I knew what they meant when my plate was delivered.

At Rose's I bought 2 lbs of jumbo shrimp, 1 lb of the royal red shrimp (head-on, 7 in a pound), 1 1/2 lb of some of the prettiest salmon that I've seen (billed as Sushi Grade and much better than what I can get locally - and for cheaper), and two redfish fillets. I did look at the whole fish to check quality: all on display had clear eyes, not dried or sunken in. Prices were better than I get here (and I have shrimpers come to my clinic selling fresh off-the-boat shrimp every season).

So, are y’all going to grill that seafood, fry or do something creole/cajun?

Panhead John with those red shrimp test at least a single shrimp grilled or pan fried with nothing but unsalted butter at the most, they definitely do taste different and have a slightly different texture.

Thanks Greg, I’ll do that. Supposedly they have a taste similiar to lobster.

Just one question, you’re literally on the shore of the Gulf of Mexico at a seafood place and you ate catfish? Don’t get me wrong I love catfish, but there in seafood heaven?

You’re right! I need to get out of my rut more often. 90% of the time I order the seafood platter and they usually always come with catfish. I was more involved in BSing with the boys instead of studying the menu……🙄

Nice! to be honest I think oysters are overrated. I had a dozen once and only half of them worked
