Hey Tom, I called the hotel and asked for some good Mexican/Tex-Mex restaurants in town. Here’s one she recommended, said she’s eaten there many times. I’ll post a few more choices later.
I’m thinking it looks pretty excellent. I’m renting a car, the difference between that and ubering from the airport isn’t worth the bother and this way I can eat breakfast anywhere if I want to.
Gristmill and Gurene Hall are always worth a stop and there is also a Mexican food restaurant there’s that we’ve stopped at many time after we got out of the river.
I believe there is a Mamacita’s in San Marcos which is a Hill Country Tex Mex chain who have restaurants in Kerville and Fredericksburg and probably some others I haven’t seen yet.
I just wanted to give a shout out to 5 of our members who are traveling a great distance to attend our little Texas Hoe-Down. pasmom is coming from almost 1,000 miles and Sid P and J-Melt are traveling about 1,150 miles from Chicago, TripleB is traveling about 1,340 miles from California and Mosca is doing around 1,640 miles…..all mileage is 1 way! Not trying to get all mushy or nuttin’ but this really means a lot to me and the other Texas members! We realize that attending something like this is a big commitment of time and expense and I believe I can speak for all the other Texas members when I say….Thank you folks for coming! We’ll do our best to live up to the Southern hospitality we’re known for……and hopefully everyone goes home 10 pounds heavier.

Didn’t some people drive from Texas and California and Indiana and all over to go to North Carolina? It’s the least I can do to return the courtesy. I just wish we had something other than Smoky Bones and Mission here…
We do. But even so there is no tradition to speak of, nothing distinctive. NEPA is beautiful, and there are many wonderful things here, but the best thing about it is that it doesn’t attract outsiders.
The Burnt Bean is definitely a possibility. The only place we’re going to for sure, at this time, is a Mexican Restaurant Thursday night. We’ll probably decide on which BBQ joints we go to after we get in town.

One place I for one will be going to is The Barbs BBQ in Lockhart. It’s just been nominated for the James Beard Best New Restaurant in the country award. Trained at Goldess’ (Texas’ top BBQ Restaurant per Texas Monthly) these ladies are apparently the real deal.
A barbecue location in Lockhart was nominated for the James Beard Foundation’s 2024 Best New Restaurant award.
Lockhart also features a new Terry Blacks location as well as three other stalwart bbq joints. It’s the bbq capital of Texas and only about 20 mins from San Marcos.
Julia and I are definitely down for 2 trips to Lockhart and one the Burnt Bean. There is also Pinkertons in Downtown San Antonio which is a little better set up for tourists than Austin
We used to eat at Mamacita’s when we dropped Thomas off at Band Camp, just checked and it looks like they have shut that one down. Would have been perfect because they could easily handled a group of 30. Julia is talking with some friends kids who go to Texas State to try and figure out what there is. New Braunsfels isn’t that far and there are plenty of non BBQ places there, and I’ve heard good things about some places back twords Wimberly and into the Hill Country that might work.

Mrs Mosca just tuned into the show Man’s Greatest Food and it is featuring SLAB Bbq & Beer. They seem to be a food TV favorite, having been on Guy Fieri’s show, too. I know nothing about it, but the sandwiches look amazing.
This is going to be one of those situations where there won’t be enough time nor stomach space. It will be beautiful.
