With Thunder77 in town, Sid P , rmeugene and I met up for a fun chat at Q BBQ in Naperville on Sunday. It was originally found off a Meathead recommendation here.
Original thread.
We all ordered platter which was pretty reasonable for $25 and came with two sides. I added some extra sides for fun.
As you can see the platter comes with a lot. I had pork ribs, sliced brisket, turkey, pulled pork, corn fritters, and burnt ends on the platter. Sides were Brussel spouts with a rub and heat added, mashed potatoes with brisket gravy, southern fried potatoes with rub, mayo, bacon and onions, and coleslaw.
The pork ribs I felt were the star. Tender, flavorful, and nicely sauced. Certainly worthy of the local awards. A solid A.
The corn fritters were also gone immediately. Just yummy. Another A.
I don’t usually make burnt ends but these burnt ends were juicy and rich with flavor. A bit sweet and fatty but still good. B+ grade.
The brisket was very good. Sliced nicely and smoky and not at all dry. I like my brisket more and so does my wife but this was definitely good. B.
The turkey and the pulled pork lacked flavor and the pork was a bit too fatty for me. My wife says the turkey was nicely smoked. C for both.
The mashed potatoes and coleslaw were for Amanda and she approved of both. Both very good. The coleslaw was fairly typical and probably a C but the mashed potatoes are definitely A worthy.
The southern fried potatoes were delicious. Cheesy, loaded with flavor with the bacon, mayo and onions, and melt in your mouth. A.
And perhaps the most controversial, the Brussel sprouts. Rubbed and roasted and with jalapeño for heat. Now, I hate Brussel sprouts and my mom never made them well. I have not had them in 30 years. But, these were amazing and just tons of flavor. So good. Of course, I was alone with them as nobody else at the table wanted any and my wife hated them as well. But maybe I can say, done well, sprouts can be really really good. A+.
Last but not least, the company! We had a great time chatting away about a variety of topics. A+++
