Mini Chicago Meat Up and Q BBQ Review

With Thunder77 in town, Sid P , rmeugene and I met up for a fun chat at Q BBQ in Naperville on Sunday. It was originally found off a Meathead recommendation here.

    Original thread.

We all ordered platter which was pretty reasonable for $25 and came with two sides. I added some extra sides for fun.

As you can see the platter comes with a lot. I had pork ribs, sliced brisket, turkey, pulled pork, corn fritters, and burnt ends on the platter. Sides were Brussel spouts with a rub and heat added, mashed potatoes with brisket gravy, southern fried potatoes with rub, mayo, bacon and onions, and coleslaw.

The pork ribs I felt were the star. Tender, flavorful, and nicely sauced. Certainly worthy of the local awards. A solid A.

The corn fritters were also gone immediately. Just yummy. Another A.

I don’t usually make burnt ends but these burnt ends were juicy and rich with flavor. A bit sweet and fatty but still good. B+ grade.

The brisket was very good. Sliced nicely and smoky and not at all dry. I like my brisket more and so does my wife but this was definitely good. B.

The turkey and the pulled pork lacked flavor and the pork was a bit too fatty for me. My wife says the turkey was nicely smoked. C for both.

The mashed potatoes and coleslaw were for Amanda and she approved of both. Both very good. The coleslaw was fairly typical and probably a C but the mashed potatoes are definitely A worthy.

The southern fried potatoes were delicious. Cheesy, loaded with flavor with the bacon, mayo and onions, and melt in your mouth. A.

And perhaps the most controversial, the Brussel sprouts. Rubbed and roasted and with jalapeño for heat. Now, I hate Brussel sprouts and my mom never made them well. I have not had them in 30 years. But, these were amazing and just tons of flavor. So good. Of course, I was alone with them as nobody else at the table wanted any and my wife hated them as well. But maybe I can say, done well, sprouts can be really really good. A+.

Last but not least, the company! We had a great time chatting away about a variety of topics. A+++

Me (PK shirt), Thunder (green), rmeugene (grey), and Sid (blue).

One more on sprouts. They had a really good level of heat too.

Who’s that guy on the far right in the group photo? He looks familiar but I just can’t place him. 🙄😉🤣

So glad y’all got together. It’s so much fun meeting our AR peers.

It’s the only person other than you who did a video intro for the NC Meatup, not that it helped 😉.

So here’s my platter and ratings.

Chopped brisket: Quite good, but not spectacular. B

Brisket burnt ends. Only the second time I’ve had them, and I’m not really a fan, so grade withheld.

Ribs: Very good, but a little on the saucy/sweet side for me. -A

Turkey: Just OK, and I’m sure the turkey breast I smoke tomorrow will be much better. C

Pulled pork: I read some reviews that called their pulled pork "fatty", and I agree. It was a fatty, stringy mess which was either not cooked nearly long enough or was made from low grade pork scraps. I LOVE pulled pork, and only ate two bites of this. D

Hush puppies: Quite good, and I appreciate that they have them because most IL BBQ joints don’t. B+

Brisket beans: They were good beans, and there were a few chunks of brisket, but the beans weren’t infused with the brisket flavor. B

I was pretty close to a D on the pork butt too. I never make it though. Would definitely not order it again.

Okay so I guess it’s my turn.
Ribs: meaty, just a little pull to get them off the bone. Good sauce. Solid A.
Brisket burnt ends: mostly great. A couple were a little bit dry. Overall A-
Pulled pork: Sorry, but a disaster. I mean how do you mess up pulled pork?? Stringy, fatty,
and lacking flavor. Positively insipid. D.
Brisket: moist, tender and delicious. A.
Turkey breast: It was good but I know I can do better.
      Hush puppies: yum!
      cornbread: B+
Cole slaw: well it was cole slaw. Not bad, not anything to write home about. B

Overall I give it 8.25 out of 10.

The company? Meh. Just kidding! 😎🤣 It was really great to meat some fellow Pit members and swap some tall tales. Really enjoyed it! Thanks guys.

I did see a number of reviews with sausage online and I did ask about it, but they didn’t have it yesterday. I would have loved to have some nice sausage instead of that pork.

Absolutely. If sausage is available I almost always order it.

I agree with everything written above, except the turkey since I don’t touch the stuff. I hope to meet many more of my AR brethren both in person and by posting more often.
