HEB - Not Just A Good Grocer

I mentioned in another recent post that our local Texas wide grocery chain, HEB, is one of the nation's best purveyors of all things food related. They go out of their way to source a variety of food, wine and other products not usually found in a local supermarket. For instance, they not only sell their own seafood and shrimp, but actually partner with and own their own fleet of fishing vessels to provide Gulf seafood product exclusively for their stores.

At any rate, I think I also mentioned my son is doing a recent internship with the grocery chain. As such he and his family (ME!!!) get an everyday 10% discount on all HEB branded items, as well as their sourced meat and seafood. And to up the game, they gave us an additional 15% off over the holidays as their holiday gift (whole lot better than a free ham).

So over Thanksgiving week I stocked up on several hundred dollars worth of product. This week is the start of Christmas week and the 25% discount continues. Although my freezers are stocked to the gills, I'm still hitting the meat and fish counters to take advantage of the sale. I had their meat cutter slice off these babies, 2" thick Prime 1 porterhouses....

Other items picked up include two racks of lamb, lamb chops, tomahawk Ducoc pork chops, a pork roast, New York prime strips, a couple of Picanhas, Wagyu flank, Wagyu outside skirt, a whole tenderloin, St. Louis cut pork ribs, Norwegian salmon, head on shrimps, head off shrimps, snapper filets, whole flounder and some tuna filets. Not going to admit what the final price tag was and is going to be but when I see 25% off, it will take an intervention to stop me

Yea, it's good to be in Texas, if for no other reason to be able to shop at HEB !!!

I have this notion of you walking up to the butcher counter and just gesturing, "This. All of it."

Funny you should mention the shrimp. I was in there the other day and noticed that they do carry a huge variety of shrimp. And those snow crab legs call out to me every time I walk by.

A few weeks ago I walked into a standard Kroger and was taken aback at how....ordinary... it was in terms of items, everything from produce to meat to just general stuff. I realized just how used to HEB I had gotten. I really can't think of anything (other that ultra specialized stuff) I've wanted that I couldn't source from HEB.

You’re right about Kroger being ordinary. If the Kroger near me wasn’t so close, 1 mile away, I’d never set foot in it again! The closest HEB to me is about 4 miles away and involves driving down Westheimer. I usually only buy a few items at a time and rarely spend more than $40.-$50.

The first HEB I really got to know was the one in College Station. I was in there one day looking at the beautiful fresh shrimp and decided to grab 3 pounds to eat while we watched football that afternoon. The young man at the counter ask if I would like them to steam them for me? When he said it was free all I could say was yes. While they steamed the shrimp I bought a styrofoam ice chest and a big bag of ice. They even iced them down for me and carried the ice chest out. The wife and I baby sat the granddaughter and ate shrimp with cocktail sauce all afternoon. It was so good!

Wow, If I was in Texas, I'd let you adopt 72 year old me!

You mentioned head on shrimp. Kenji in one of his books advises against head on. Something about an enzyme from the head affecting the body if head not promptly removed. Any perspectives on that? (Always good to ask Dad for advice.)

Sometimes I think and think and think and think that Kenji overthinks things
