In past years we’ve done 2 turkeys 🦃. Mariano’s (Kroger) sold them for something like 79¢ per pound if you spent a certain amount on groceries. Wasn’t to hard to hit that threshold. Last year though I bought my turkey at Costco for cheap. It was a fresh turkey too so I bought it closer to thanksgiving and didn’t have to thaw it out. Probably will go that route this year but due to a smaller group this year I’m subbing one of the turkeys for a steak or a roast.

didn't know Costco sold fresh turkeys - I wonder.... I wonder wonder wonder... maybe I should plan on that. Wonder how I find out if they're going to and if I can get on a list or something so I don't make a trip and find out they don't have any, etc. Hrmmmm.

Ok I called my local Costco (40 mins away) and they told me they WILL be carrying fresh turkeys this year. Not sure when they will start arriving, but maybe to call back next week and check again.

That's an interesting option, I am going to have to think hard about this.

Anyone have an opinion on say, Butterball standard vs Butterball Whole Tom Turkeys? Is there a difference besides size?

Am I better doing 2 smaller vs one large? I really REALLY like a giant whole turkey, just for bragging rights and photo ops, but... is there a significant difference if you're spatchcocking? I have a giant smoker, so room isn't an issue.

Even spatchcocked two smaller birds will cook faster than one really big one. I'm with you, though. I always go for the biggest bird I can. They're just so damn photogenic.

I've done up to a 24 pound turkey on occasion, spatchcocked on the smoker is best, and faster than whole. I've rotisserie cooked 20 pound birds the past several years, but my very BEST turkey results are "deconstructed" turkey where I part it out and cook each piece to perfection. I found a technique to keep the leg quarters intact but debone the thigh and tie it up that lets you have nicely sliced medallions of dark meat, to go with slices of the deboned breast for those who like white meat.

My local Kroger, Butterball was $0.99,/lb, Walmart was $1.04/lb and my local Wild Fork was $0.98/lb. never had an issue with Butterball. In fact, I oven roasted one last week and it was great.

Our local Aldi has Butterball for $1.07/lb for 16-22#. Last year, they had a special at .99/lb for some other brand.

We Love Thanksgiving. It’s the only time of year we cook turkey. The rich giblet gravy makes the lean white meat delicious. Sausage stuffing cooked outside the bird so it’s nice and crispy on top. Homemade chunky cranberry sauce, apple, squash and pecans pan-roasted. Grilled Fresh green beans wrapped in homemade bacon, yeah.

              But THEN….
Gnawing on a cold turkey leg the next day is one of my simple pleasures.
Turkey sandwiches with homemade bacon, and homemade cranberry sauce. Hmmm.

I start curing bacon on Monday to smoke on Saturday. 20lbs..Can’t wait. 🤤

Looks like I bought at the right time, same turkeys I got the other week are now 1.04-1.49 a lb. I plan on grabbing a couple more AFTER thanksgiving or if there's another sub .50 a lb sale between now and then for a cook down the road.

Ours are now $0.88/lb for HEB store brand and $0.99/lb for Butterball. If you are heavily influenced by meaningless marketing, you can spring for the Organic Natural turkeys at $2.06/lb.

Or, get it free when you buy a ham.

(The hams are $3-$6/lb....works out to about $28-$35 per ham depending on flavor.)

Kroger here in the Cincinnati area has Honeysuckle White's for $.99 per pound. Not Sure if you have Krogers up there, but if you do, check them out.

After ringing up my purchases yesterday, the grocery store clerk said I qualified for a free turkey, 12 to 24 lbs. Can pick it up any time between now and Turkey Day.

My PBC will be lonely this year, not getting to smoke a turkey. And I'm sad about it too. Ineffably sad. (I was waiting to use that word in a sentence. )

EFFABLE is a whole other topic - and probably a different website!

                        Check with Mattel Corp. lol

                        Very clever, realdocBBQ .

F-able is not quite the same as the possible word effable, I'm guessing.

                        jfmorris , take note.

Just ordered an antibiotic-free bird from Wild Fork for $1.98/lb. We got one from them last year and it was just outstanding, so that's a very fair price IMO.

I kinda want to do a turkey this year. (After all, I do have a PBC.) I haven't done one in years as even a small bird is a lot of food for two people. Plus, I'm usually turkey'ed out by the time Thanksgiving is over with all of the work and hobby holiday get-togethers. Still, I may try to snag a 12-15 lb bird and do it closer to Christmas.
