Buc-ee’s Done Lost Their Damn Mind! 😡

I’ve always been a big fan of Buc-ee’s but they’re starting to piss people off. I’ve known for a while that they will go to great lengths to protect their logo and image and have sued several small businesses in the past. I’m all for copyright infringement laws but this is getting ridiculous! In one of these videos they’re suing a small mom and pop corner store called Beaver’s Mini Mart in a town called Beaver Creek in Ohio. This store has had that name and beaver logo for 20 years! So Buc-ee’s opens a location in Ohio, not even close to the store, and decides to sue them for trademark infringement. 😡 How in the hell would anyone confuse these two stores is beyond me. The other video is a store in Canton, Georgia called Teddy’s Market and they use a teddy bear as their logo. When you watch the video you’ll see they don’t even resemble each other. The locals in both towns are pissed off and are rallying behind the 2 stores. Lots of comments online are blasting Buc-ee’s for being just a big greedy corporation, I tend to agree, they’re getting too big for their britches and are starting to lose a lot of goodwill they had.

Just asked my wife about this. Kind of a catch 22 situation when dealing with trademark law. You can potentially lose your trademark rights if you fail to defend it. On one hand you need to defend it but on the other hand you very well might give your company a very black eye as far as the public is concerned. She remembers a situation that happened in Baltimore decades ago when a small restaurant named Sony’s and named for its owner was sued by the giant electronics firm Sony for trademark infringement. Public opinion definitely couldn’t connect how an electronics manufacturer could be mistaken or harmed by a small restaurant in an entirely different industry. No matter the absurdity, Sony and Buc-ee;s trademark attorneys got paid.

Yeah, we had a situation like that a number of years ago at the university. They'd done a freshman t-shirt using Mr Peanut. Planters had to sue. They said that they didn't really mind our using it, but since we hadn't asked and done it the right way they had to sue to not undercut any suits they did care about. University had to make a good faith effort to collect and destroy all of those shirts.

Been to Beaver Creek many times for softball tournaments. Also, been to that store. Shame they have to defend themselves over this junk. Hope Buc-ee's loses.

The sad part is that these small mom and pop stores Buc-ee’s goes after just don’t have the resources to fight them without going bankrupt. They usually always lose these cases and have to either change their logo or they reach some sort of settlement with them. I understand the need to protect their logo and name, but most of these cases are just ridiculous to think someone is going to confuse them with Buc-ee’s.

Panhead John wait until they find out about the "Bucky the Beaver" statue/trophy at the local softball fields. But I agree with them probably not having the resources, that was a pretty small shop, and the only way we stumbled on it was we needed some food stuffs for an all-day tournament. Did find out later, it was a staple for area folks.

I agree, that seems over the top.

I remember "Monster Cable" suing everyone and their GD'd cousin for any use of the word monster in the public sphere. That alone has turned me off of them and I will never, ever purchase one of their products.

But then, I know I'm not the typical, normal person. My boycott doesn't mean shit to them. But I will say - I've kind of mostly avoided Buc'ee's since I got the initial 'oooh's and 'aaaah's out of my system. This makes me even less likely to patronize them.

K-Mart pissed me off in the mid 70’s and I never entered one of their stores again. Now they are bankrupt. I know my own personal boycott wasn’t the cause but somehow I feel victorious. 🙂

Donw Kmart pissed me off too. Gave a cashier a 20, she gave me change for a 10. Manager believed her, shut down the register and counted, then apologized when he gave me the correct change. I hate it for the workers, but I wasn't sad when they shut down.

My problem with K-Mart, which had a large store about a half a mile from my house, was that they almost never had what I went in for, and I almost always had to drive to Wal-Mart a couple of miles away. BTW, their subsidiary, Sears, was also a nightmare because the employees didn't know their merchandise worth a tinker's da*n.

Anyway, the good news was that when the K-Mart store closed down, HEB bought the property and turned it into an HEB Plus, which is great.

I hope they fight because Buckee's doesn't always win. They are and have been trying open a location just north of Colorado Springs, but keep getting shot down. Their latest is to build in a location that is zone for a convience store, which hasn't been going well for them.

I have just almost completely quit stopping at Buc-ees because of the crowds. Now, I’m done with them. The owners of Buc-ees definitely aren’t good folk from Texas. Screw them. Shame on them.

When we lived in a suburb of Seattle called Magnolia we had a long time Chinese place that called itself Panda's. When Panda Express entered that market they sued the existing business. Panda's decided that the legal fees it would cost them to fight it, despite their theoretical position in the market, were just too much so they changed their name to Pandasia which worked out in the settlement.

If Buc-ees suing a small business in Beavercreek over a trademark logo wasn’t enough to get you to stop going there, at least let the co-founders son facing 21 felony counts of allegedly secretly recording 13 victims without their consent in bathrooms and bedrooms at family properties over a two-year period do it!
As well as being charged with a third-degree felony for the alleged possession or promotion of child sexual assault material (CSAM) found on seized electronic devices during the ongoing investigation.
It’s crazy when you stir a pot, and try to bully, what all ends up coming out.

Buc-ee’s response is in this video. 🙄 Pause the video when it shows his written response to the mayor if you want to read the whole thing. This is blowing up big time across the U.S.! No matter Buc-ee’s response, they’re still wrong.

Donw I’m curious as to what Kathy thinks about Buc-ee’s response. To me it looks like Buc-ee’s is ok with them having their 4 ? stores, but doesn’t want them to get any bigger…..regionally or nationally. That’s kind of what it looks like to me anyway, not sure.

Basically any information based on information from a third party, the mayor, is not a basis for any opinion. The owner stated he did file a trademark application only in Ohio. A application for trademark search at the Ohio Secretary of State should find that. She did do a search at the USPTO and didn’t find an application or a registered trademark either.

Just thinking Buc-ee’s public relations firm is getting overtime dealing with the reactions? Not an opinion, but maybe a hunch.
