I ran across this video about the Kirkland Brand from Costco, from how it got started, to who makes some of their Kirkland brand products [well, a couple of em anyway] to its market share…and loads of other interesting tidbits. Once I started watching it I couldn’t stop. It’s about 9 1/2 minutes long.

Good video. I knew about the 15% max markup and I believe they make big bucks just on their membership fees. I do love Costco, I wish the one I go to just wasn't so crowded.
Just in the past few days, I've seen car ads on TV and for the first time they mention the Costco discount.Last edited by Purc; April 5, 2025, 05:01 PM.

Yeah that was definitely riveting, to a degree. I watched Heat for the first time last night so kinda hard to compete.
I really like the business back stories of the WSJ. They have a good one on Chick-Fil-A.

If there’s a Costco Business Center by you, check it out as well. Memberships are good there too. Not as crowded and different things. Ours has half lambs hanging in a walk in fridge.

I went to a business Costco on the southwest side of Chicago back in December. The meat refrigerator was the larger than my old 1200 square foot house. Bought 2 amazing tomahawk stakes for like $70. It was pretty empty too.

Panhead John Yes, yes you do. If only for the meat department.

Given Costco is my very best lifelong friend, I already knew some of the marketing "tricks." Brilliant, I've always thought. They limit the number of SKUs, to make stocking and inventory simpler. So, go into Publix and there are 15 kinds of mustard on the shelf, 15 SKUs, but Costco has one or two. When they try something new, they give it a trial period first, and then if kept they find something to jettison. I didn't know about how they choose the manufacturers of their store brand, but makes sense. I am a total fan, everything in my house seems to have Kirkland written on it somewhere. Someday, I will venture to the Business Center, but I don't need that much, and the closest BC is in Orlando, and ugh. Who wants to drive I4 to Orlando? Nobody.
