Hello from Wyoming and question about single burner gas grills

I've been lurking here on AR for several months and finally ramped up my courage and became a member. Until I found this site I thought I knew a thing or two about grilling. I have since discovered just how wrong I was. The vast information available here is truly wonderful to see. It is also one of the few forums where everyone seems to get along. That's something I can't say about many of the other forums I've followed over the years. Good job on that ladies and gentlemen!

My question is - among the several grills I use I have a Weber Q single burner table top gasser. We take it with us when travelling and I have been wondering if there might be a way (a safe way) to temporarily close off half of the one burner it has to use it for two zone grilling. I've looked through several of the forums here and so far haven't been able to find anything on point. It may very well be that is because it is impossible to do this. But I thought I would ask the folks here who obviously know a lot more than I do about grills and grilling. If anyone might have any info about this I would really appreciate your feedback. Thanks.

    Bill

Welcome from Colorado. FWIW, I have a Weber Q2000 single burner and I doubt there is any practical way to rig it for 2 zone grilling ... unless you set up some kind of heat deflector to shield whatever you're cooking from direct flames on one side.

Thanks for the comment. I was thinking in terms of just putting a metal sheet over one end of the burner but then I worry about the unburned propane which would inevitably flow out from under it. I guess I could try it with the cover open and see what happens - but propane is propane, after all.

This was along the lines of what I was thinking. Maybe a simple heat shield that set's overtop half the burner.

I have one of those little Charbroil tabletop units and it tends to run a bit cool on the end away from the gas, so I get 2-zone more or less. I tend to agree that just shielding / redirecting the heat is probably the best you can hope for.
