Hi all,
My name is Rene Gaudreau and I was born and raised in Timmins, Ontario, Canada.
I got my start in Barbecue about 15 years ago, while watching a show called License to Grill by a fellow Canadian Rob Rainford. Afterwards, I discovered Steven Raichlen, his shows and his books and the rest is BBQ history.
About 5 years ago, I was convinced to enter my first BBQ competition. It was an amateur division with ribs and chicken and I came away with the GC. I was as shocked as anyone else. That led down the competition path for me and have since competed in a few events in Ontario. My BBQ team is called Heart of Gold BBQ, but we shorten it to HOG BBQ. I have a blog where I document my adventures and recipes. We will be competing in our first KCBS event in June.

2 summers ago, I pitched a TV show to our community TV station. What started off as 5 minute BBQ and grilling tips segments quickly morphed and became 12 half-hour episodes of a show called Backyard BBQ Battle. The format has myself and my buddy Bill going head to head cooking one ingredient or cooking to one theme and sending food to judges. The show is all about contrasts (Red vs blue, old school vs new school, simplicity vs complexity. It was great fun and we now have two full seasons airing all over Ontario on Eastlink TV. That's me on the right in the pic below. You can also see this year's promo reel at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HzTeWvgFJh4
