Hello from the Wet Coast! (Vancouver, Canada)

    Hello fellow BBQers
I'm excited to be a part of this, and am looking forward to many years ahead of prime and perfect REAL BBQ. (no offence to my fellow Canadians, but often the word BBQ is miscontrued up here: Putting some weiners on a Hibatchi is NOT BBQ).
Living in the lower mainland, 'Pacific Northwest'ish, it's a difficult environment out in the back yard for most equipment. After struggling for the last few years with lower end equipment rusting out after a single season, and less than optimal results with trying to smoke a brisket in a gas Napoleon grill, I'm here to gain more information on the best smoker setup for that damp, mossy, rainy and always in the shade deck of mine.

Ceramic = Kamado. That was my replacement for the three cheap metal smokers I had rusted out when I moved to the Mass coast. No worries about rust, except maybe a hinge replacement in 5-10 years. Actually, I didn't have to do that, and have had the BGE for 15 years now, all in coastal locations.

But check out the cooker reviews here on the site, and the section on kinds of cookers. If you want an "outside" read on Kamados and what you can do with them, check this book out: https://www.amazon.ca/Kamado-Smoker-...+Best+Barbecue

Welcome! Looking forward to hearing your adventures in cooking!

Welcome to the Pit! Kamados might be a good choice for you since, ceramics don't rust and the only metal are the hinge and bans which are thick metal. Also a Weber charcoal kettle might be a good choice since the cooker is porcelain coated and and the legs to the kettle are aluminum.

Welcome to The Pit! I totally understand where you're coming from as I live in Western Washington. I just heard recently on the news that we've had only 30 hours of no cloud covering sunlight since November. The best advice I can offer on the rusting issue is letting your stuff breathe. Try high open sided overhead cover for your equipment that has plenty of side side sweeping air movement to keep metal from collecting moisture. This method also works well for old tractors.

Welcome to the Pit!! I cant wait to get to Vancouver. I am going there this November!

You should look at a kamado. They are great cookers in any weather, and they last forever, as long as you don't knock it over!
