    Don from Indiana

Hi all, My name is Don and I live in southern Indiana. I grew up learning to Bar B que whole hog from my grandfather. He would do it as a way to make extra money on the side every weekend in the spring and summer. I have been cooking all my life from 13 till today (62). I have aspirations to join the bar b que circuit as I will be retiring in a few months. I Have been cooking on a Lyfe tyme stick burner for the last 10 yrs or so. and just ordered and I am picking up wed. a Yoder 640s comp. cart.
I would like some advice, would you become a judge first or just jump right in and compete on the backyard circuit.
Thanks in advance for your advice.

Welcome from Colorado. I don't do competition cooking but why don't you just jump in as a contestant and go for it. Best of luck, enjoy the fun.

Really just learning other types of cookers.
I also have a backyard concrete block pit for whole hog
I thought a pellet would be easier in comps.

Welcome to the Pit from Dallas, Texas! Since you haven’t retired yet it would make sense to me to get into judging between now and the time you retire as a way to get a feel as to how judges will respond to your cooks. I don’t really compete, but have in three Big Green Eggfests. Those competitions are different in that nothing is head to head. You cook whatever you want and are judged on taste, creativity and presentation. In that kind of competition you get an edge up if you cook something that is creative, tastes good and the judges have nothing to compare it to. Good luck as you move toward the world of retirement. I’ve been in it for twelve years now.

I grew up in 812. I'm still a Hoosier fan but now I live in 317. Welcome!

If you're ever up for an Indiana meat-up, let me know.

I just realized you asked for advice about whether or not to become a judge for BBQ competitions. If you're going to compete, go to the judges' training, and take note of the multitudes of people who are there who know absolutely nothing about good BBQ. :-) That'll help you do better on your guessing about WTH to do about competing.

Sorry I can't help you with the comp question.
It's not my thing. I would like to check one out as a spectator sometime, but don't have really any interest in competing.
Best of luck to you on that path 👍

Welcome to the best site in BBQ, I also recommend Meatheads book. l'm in 812. Having done both comp, and judging. It's a toss up, which to do first. I did competition first then became a judge. No longer do either. (old age) If your not a member of KCBS that's where most of your sanctioned BBQ comp are found, Mt Vernon IN, Owensboro KY, Murphysboro IL, Boonville IN, are the closest ones. Smoke on my friend.
