Your options on a pellet smoker can range from cheaper manufacturers like Pit Boss, to midrange like Grilla, or to more expensive models from MAK and LSG. Smoke flavor can also be added via a smoke tube too. Depends on your budget and requirements.

        Welcome!

          Welcome to The Pit.

As mentioned above, putting an insulated blanket, (aka welding blanket), over your cooker might help when the temps are below 50°.

Moved here from Clearwater in 1989 at 29 years old with no intention of staying. Grew up in Sarasota. Down every year for Christmas. Do a lot of Lakeshore & Bluff Boulder work in afflent areas. Not very applicable there.

Salutations from Hays, KS! I have a Yoder YS-640 and smoke all year long. I think it has good smoke flavor (although my family prefers a lighter smoke profile) and I feel like the bark is really good. While the YS-640 is built like a tank with heavy gauge steel I purchased the insulating jacket for my Yoder YS-640. In western Kansas we have A LOT of wind. I have found since putting the “coat” on the smoker that I burn fewer pellets no matter the weather hot or cold. I owned a Green Mountain Grill as my introduction to smoking a pellet grills and feel the YS-640 has more smoke flavor (just my humble opinion). I did beef plate short ribs over Christmas and the ambient temp was 12 and the wind was blowing 35-45 and the machine did great.

If you have further questions let me know.

captainlee I had agreed initially after I bought the Yoder, however, with the high wind speeds here (not unusual for 25mph continuous winds) I had more conductive heat loss than than I anticipated. The jacket has ameliorated that temp loss. On non-windy days I saved some pellets when really cold.

I do love this pellet grill though.

We get those winds too all year. I have my smoker in a good location to do a lot of blocking. Maybe something to consider.

Sadly, with the way my house sits we almost always have a breeze. When I first got the smoking cooked in my detached garage quite a bit just inside the door as it big and save for a direct east wind I could hide pretty well. My bride, however, wanted it closer and on the back patio…so…we agreed and it’s on the back patio! 😂😃

Picked up a Members Mark from Sam's to see if I like the method enough to invest any further. They are insulated and have good reviews outside of a batch of bad circuit boards.
