    Hello From South Florida

Hello folks! KegTed here in Davie, FL. I cook on a Broil King KEG 4000. It's an amazing cooker and I reckon it'll cook just about anything. I use a gizmo called Tip Top Temp on the top vent to help regulate the temps - works great.

I joined the Pit about 5 weeks ago and paid my membership fee via my Visa card. I still have NOT RECEIVED the Food Temperature Guide Magnet that I'm supposed to get. How long does it take for them to mail it out?

KegTed - welcome to The Pit and welcome to The Addiction.

I've never cooked on a Keg, but I have several friends who use that type of Kamado to really great effect. I've only cooked on BGEs, Primos, Akorns, and a couple of Komodo Kamados. I'm looking forward to seeing your cooks!

    We're glad you're here.

KegTed Welcome to the Pit! I cook on a big green egg. I'm wondering if a Tip Top Temp will work on the egg. Can you provide a link as to where to purchase it?

Hi Pork Butt! Here's a link to the TTT website: Tip Top Temp. Check out the Customer grills and modifications page for a pic of the TTT on an Egg and other cookers.

Here's a pic of my KEG. It's the same size as a LBGE. Most (maybe all) LBGE accessories fit KEG.

Here's a pic of the top vent on my KEG. The TTT fits perfectly over the vents.

KegTed Thanks for the link. I am wondering about how do you adjust the bottom vent, and the TTT appears to completely shut down whe the heat rises. Or, was their video just overkill using a heat gun. So, at 225 or 250 will it shut dow or still be partially open? Tell me how you use it?

LA Pork Butt, here's a shot of the lower vent setting on my KEG. If I were going for 225° it would be closed a little more. The magic to the operation of the TTT is the bi-metal spring gizmo in the middle of the flapper plate. It's kinda like an analog style thermostat - when it gets too hot, it closes the flapper to shut it down and lower the temp, when it gets cooler, it opens the flapper to allow more air and raise the temp. When cooking at low temps like 200° - 250°, it will look like it's closed or nearly closed most of the time - BUT, it works - the fire does not die and it holds temps for hours on end.

Thanks for the info. It is really helpful. It would seem that the setting of the lower vent is critical. If it is open too wide the top vent will shut down completely which according to this website would not be good (too much carbon dioxide, I think).
