I was given a bag of this lump charcoal. When I opened it, I was disappointed at the small chunks. It’s ALL small chunks. Oh well, it was free so I’ll use it. Wow! It instantly became my favorite. I love the way it burns, how even it burns, how long it lasts, everything. I spoke with the chef of a small restaurant that cooks over two Big Green Eggs in his restaurant. It’s his favorite too.
It does not make sense. We chase bigger lumps for better burns, then this small lump stuff comes along and blows it away. I think I figured out the secret.

Never heard of it, and a Google search didn't turn up anything besides the web page you linked. Do you know where you can purchase it? Might be just a local thing, the contact info is a 330 area code, which is eastern Ohio.
I suspect the small chunks pack together closer and burn more uniformly.
Yeah, I’d agree with the idea of small lump packing together and burning more consistently.
Masterbuilt lump advertises a similar idea with small lump. However, my bags tend to be a pretty wide range of large and small pieces. The key thing is though, with the MB560, it is the perfect lab to test this kind of thing as all of the lump is held in the gravity-fed hopper so the lump is tightly packed.
And, burn times for a number of different brands (including FOGO) of lump are about 8 hours per full hopper. The only way I have been able to increase the burn time is by mixing in coconut charcoal.
I just discovered this charcoal at the local feed store. Decent priced too. Haven’t tried it out yet but they post is encouraging. Will save me a trip to Ace hardware if I can just get it at the feed store 😃
There are some curiously rectangular pieces showing there. Does it appear to have some carbonized construction scrap in it? If so I would steer clear of it.
