I have thought about doing this for a while but have been skeptical. Might just have to give it a whirl now. Used to make wine but now it's time to move on to aging spirits. Can't find Buffalo Trace products around here but have had a chance to pick some up when I travel to Indiana or Ohio for work. Four Roses is very plentiful around these parts so might try it with that.

Any whiskery you love will work good. I bet the cheaper Four Roses expressions will be great. I don't usually age the pricier whiskies, I make the cheaper ones *into* the pricier ones! I just refilled my 3L with Early Times bottled in bond (50%). It's really good right out of the bottle, especially at the $25 price for the larger 1L bottle! A touch rough around the edges, but I figure it will make a great aged one. I will let it go until November.

I took a different route in my barrel and actually made bourbon instead of enhancing bourbon off the shelf. 1-1/2 liters of 100 proof commercial Tennessee moonshine and four months later I had a unique home made bourbon with my name on it.

For those that may not want to fuss with barrel maintenance and want to experiment with enhanced spirits, this might be a fun option:

Introducing, the Oak Bottle, an American oak cask charred inside to a Level 3 that enables you to add your own signature barrel finish to spirits or wine quickly and easily.

    Cheers!

I've seriously considered getting another barrel and doing just that!
