Need a recommendation for “a good sippin’ whiskey” to take to a bbq

Something that shows I thought (asked) about it, but no bank-breaker, either. Living in Pennsylvania, we can’t get some of the more esoteric stuff. Domestic, Irish, Scotch, doesn’t matter.

    Thanks!

Woodford Reserve Double Oak would be reasonable price and quality sip.

I agree with the others on Woodford Double Oaked. It's like dessert in a glass.

How much do you want to pay? Give a range and I can suggest a few others for you. But going off the Woodford DO, here are a few more:

    Four Roses Single Barrel
Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit (might be on the higher end of your price range)
    Wild Turkey Rare Breed
Jack Daniels Single Barrel Barrel Proof (rye or bourbon)
    Russels Reserve 10yr
    Knob Creek 12yr

These are all great and should be available (at least I can buy these at any time here at home and have them on hand)

Ok - another in the $50 range, Elijah Craig Toasted Barrel, or Elijah Craig Toasted Rye. But RR10 is a great buy for the price and a 10yr bourbon. Mosca

If you want to save a buck the Four Roses appeals to many palates.

The Four Seasons and the Knob Creek are winners in my book

It’s all personal taste but for something good that will appeal broadly, I agree with Four Roses single barrel.

If you want to try something different, Japanese whiskeys are very easy drinkers. Toki is a good approachable one and should be in the mid-30s pricewise.

We don’t drink but keep a bar for guests. A friend gave us a list of what to stock. I see Makers Mark, Knob Creek, Basil Hayden, and an Old Grandad 7 year on the shelf. Maybe one of those is in your price range.

Eagle Rare, Jack Daniels Single Barrel Select, or Angels Envy. Also look for George Dickle Single Barrel.

Purc I don't drink Tennessee whiskey very often but when I do it's Dickel bonded.

Bkhuna Me too. I don't like Jack or Chattanooga Whiskey, even though I lived in Chattanooga 30 years. My first bottle of booze when I was legal at 18, was Jack Daniels Green Label. Dickel BIB is what I may bring to the Cajun Meat Up this month.

Angels Envy gets my vote every time--both the bourbon and the rye.

Angel's Envy Bourbon. It's about $50 in PA Fine Wine and Good Spirits. Really smooth and tasty "sip."

It is an acquired taste Tom but if there are a number of other whiskies being served, it is a good one to include in the mix. If it is the only one for everyone to sip, maybe not.

STEbbq I got no idea. I have a semi-debt to repay, and I assume the host keeps everything that doesn’t get drank. I’m bringing a case of good craft beer and a bottle of sippin’ whiskey to even up.

If it is a gift a bit for the host and he appreciates good whisky, I’d think he’d appreciate it.

I could give you a list of 50 but that would be too much so I'll list my personal top 2 or 3 candidates from the main styles that are typically fairly easy to find and affordable. There are of course MANY many more...

For bourbon my top recommendation is Buffalo Trace, if you can find it. I think it's the best affordable whiskey. Next would be Elijah Craig small batch & Woodford Reserve.

Scotch: Monkey Shoulder is a darn good easy drinker blended Scotch. Glenmorangie is great stuff too. They're both inexpensive and still quite pleasant, IMO. Some affordable Scotches are also 'cheap', and bleh (looking at you Johnnie Walker Red Label).

Irish: if you can find it, I wholeheartedly recommend Shanky's Whip. It tastes how vanilla extract smells. It's wonderful stuff and can really sneak up on you. It's like a really good dark rum actually, more so than a classic Irish whiskey.

Huskee I have 3 bottles of the original formulation of green that they stopped making in 2011. They are from the 2007 bottling. It's completely different from the crap they have out in the screw top bottles. It's actually the dram that caused my scotch obsession. Fwiw is is a blended malt, and the only JW that doesnt have grain alcohol mixed in.

texastweeter I didn't know there was a difference or a coveted one from back then vs now. I think the modern one is delicious! It'd be nice to try some of this pre-2011 Green that you speak so highly of.

Huskee JW swears it's the same, however we had drank them side by side. Not only is there a NOTICABLE difference in taste, there is in color as well. When they discontinued i emailed them (around late 2013) and they said that they had ran out of one of the key single malts used to blend the pure malt recipe and could not get anymore. With the differences, that info, and the relaunch you cant convince me, or several other JW Green fans that it's the same.

I went with the Woodford Reserve, not the Double Oak though. What I figured was that I would go to the liquor store (we call them State Stores here in PA) and ask the guy behind the counter what he would recommend, and if it was on the list then that’s what I would get. And he said Woodford Reserve. I asked about the DO, and he said some folks like the oakiness and some don’t. So I just got the regular, the big bottle. It’s going to fit the bill for what I need.

With the DO I don't get oakiness so much, I get Werther's Original, and it's divine!
