Friday cocktail thread: Scrooge edition (sort of)

It's Friday and cocktails are visible on the horizon. I'm going to be Scrooge and not offer any Christmas-themed cocktails myself. However, for the Tiny Tims out there, I do have something to offer by way of a friend but my theme this week is all Fernet Branca.

    The Bartender's Handshake
    • 1.5 ounces Fernet Branca shot

That's it. Not everyone loves Fernet Branca but a lot of bartenders do so the Bartender's Handshake is often shared among bartenders. In fact, many bartenders have the Fernet Branca eagle tattooed on their bodies somewhere.

    Fernet Y Coca
    • 1 cup Coca-Cola
    • 1/2 cup Fernet Branca
I discovered this drink recently and I really like it. I posted a picture here recently. I'm looking forward to trying it with Mexican Coke.

    The Industry Sour
    • 1 oz Fernet Branca
    • 1 oz Green Chartreuse
    • 1 oz lime juice
    • 1 oz simple syrup
This is the drink I have not tried yet that I'm looking forward to trying this weekend! I finally got my hands on some Green Chartreuse. I had a little left in a small bottle that I didn't dare use while the Chartreuse shortage raged on. Apparently, those lazy monks finally got around to making more.

And for you Tiny Tims, I'm heading to a neighbor's house tonight for Feuerzangenbowle.

    Feuerzangenbowle
    • 2 oranges (unwaxed, organic)
    • 2 lemons (unwaxed, organic)
    • 8 1⁄2 cups red wine (2 liters, see note)
    • 1 stick cinnamon, about 2-3 inches long
    • 5 cloves
    • 1 dash ginger, grounded
    • 1⁄2 lb sugar loaf
    • 2 cups brown rum (at least 54% alcohol)
Feuerzangenbowle is a traditional German alcoholic drink for which a rum-soaked sugarloaf is set on fire and drips into mulled wine. It is often part of a Christmas or New Year's Eve tradition. The name translates literally as fire-tongs punch, "Bowle" meaning "punch" being borrowed from English.

The popularity of the drink was boosted in Germany by the 1944 comedy film Die Feuerzangenbowle. It is a traditional drink of some German fraternities, who also call it Krambambuli, as the red color is reminiscent of a cherry liqueur of that name which was manufactured by the distillery Der Lachs zu Danzig [de] (in Gdańsk) - Wikipedia

Hopefully, I'll get a cool picture to post later.

SheilaAnn that's how I always pronounced it but after Huskee asked I second guessed myself. I don't think I've ever ordered it in a bar

Well, I ordered it at the bar last night and pronounced it like it's spelled and didn't get corrected.

I like the theme here! Reminds me of the drink my wife had a few weeks back at a bar we went to. Was called “Resting Grinch Face”. Was an interesting cocktail but actually carried through nicely!

excited to see what your photos bring!

I've never heard of that liquor, must investigate. You come up with some wild stuff. Your cabinet must be an entire room.

I'm a bit under the weather, have been all week. The last 2 nights have been Four Roses Barrel Proof Single Barrel, and right now I switched it up with a Lime Michelobe Ultra with a dash a gin in it (yum!).

Attjack A cousin of mine turned me on to Beer-ritas (with added lime and tequila) and I though 'yuck, how lame'. But darn if they weren't really good on a hot day! So I expanded from there, started using bourbon in a light beer, and it adds a caramel-ly note, really good. Started buying Michelob Ultra Lime because I like them at the beach on a hot day, and adding gin or tequila, both wonderful in them. Note- should you ever try it, go lightly, you can ruin it in a hurry. A quick glug glug.

And last i heard Four Roses Single Barrel Barrel Proof is only avail at the distillery now, that's the only place I've gotten them, and they limit it to 1 per person per day. I stocked up 4 through two visits my wife & I made the last couple years. I have only 1 left! Their regular Single Barrel is typically excellent too. At 100 proof it's nothing to shake a stick at, but if you can't get to the distillery it's a solid option if you spot it. The bottles look the same.

I like the JD bonded whiskey and triple mash, but I hate those 700ml bottles.

Huskee it's funny that you say that because I was thinking about adding the Kramer painting when I saw your avatar on this thread. It's a classic.

Perhaps the butchered mandarin isn’t that great in this photo, but it sure did add to the OF!

I also have something cool coming for tomorrow that I think the gang will like!

This was a very cool little ceremony and the Feuerzangenbowle was actually very tasty.

Attjack - here’s my new to me ice project - freezing items in the ice - here mandarin slices for an Old Fashioned. I didn’t execute on this as well as i could have, but for a presentation I think it’s pretty cool if having friends over and you want to take it up a bit!
