I know that i live in the middle of the mountains and done get out much, but this impressed me. Down at the kids house this weekend son in law asked if i wanted a smoked Old Fashion. Of course but how do you smoke a drink? He has this neat smoking kit complete with wood chips and an ignitor. Place the lid with screen over top of the glass and smoke. It really works, you can definitely taste the smoke. I'm sure that i am years behind on this but where i live the only fancy move a bartender makes with a bottle is when he drops it on the floor.

There are plenty of ways to smoke a cocktail -- from the FOGHAT or SMOKESHOW (or other branded "hat") that you'd put on top of the glass to let the smoke settle in, to a more mass-drink method of using a Smoking Gun and a cloche/dome/cover to make a more grandiose smoking effect
the new thing is to make smoked ice rather than smoking the drink, and use that ice in your beverage. Haven't tried this ourselves yet.
Some people may torch lightly or smoke the citrus peel before it's added to the drink
Not every cocktail needs to be smoked. It tends to taste better with brown-beverage-based drinks rather than clear. For clear beverages, you're likely better off smoking the garnish rather than trying to smoke the liquid.

I was having this conversation with a friend just yesterday. About 3 - 4 years ago a bunch of my fire fightin' buddies came to our place for a campout and this subject came up. I remembered MH's treatise about smoked ice cubes and we gave it a go. We put a bunch of ice cubes in a smoker for the prescribed amount of time and then remade giant ice cubes for our bourbons.
To a man we all thought it smelled disgustingly like structure fire overhaul! It smelled, to us, of that nasty amalgam of the entire contents of a dwelling that was intensely subjected to extreme heat and direct flame impingement, then dowsed with a copious amount of water to the point of containment but not extinguishment. Wet, nasty, soggy and disgusting. A smell every firefighter knows.
However, to a man, we all heartily agreed that the flavor was amazing and not what our noses expected.

We know Traeget and other places have suggestions on how to smoke ice cubes, Americas Test Kitchen suggest going the simpler route and use Liquid Smoke instead
To add liquid smoke to cocktails, we mixed ¼ teaspoon of liquid smoke per 1 cup of water and froze the water in ice cube trays.
