The sun is shining and cocktails will be had.

We've had a long, cold, wet Winter and Spring but it's Friday and the sun is shining today and tomorrow before we plunge back into rain and darkness. My plans include yardwork, BBQ, and cocktails.

Here's what's on deck for the weekend.

    Rattlesnake

I've already been "researching" this week and it's a winner.

    2 ounces rye
    3/4 ounce lemon juice
    3/4 ounce simple syrup
    2 dashes absinthe
    1 egg white

    Tommy’s Margarita

I am looking forward to trying to simple version of the Margarita.

    2 ounces blanco tequila
1 ounce lime juice, freshly squeezed
    1/2 ounce agave nectar
    Garnish: salt rim

    The Gibson’s Pauline

This cocktail first appeared in The Savoy Cocktail Book.

1 1/2 ounces unaged rum, preferably San Zanj Haitian rum
    3/4 ounce lemon juice
    1/2 ounce simple syrup
4 dashes absinthe, preferably Kübler Original
1 dash orange bitters, preferably Regans’ or Fee Brothers

    What will you be drinking?

Maker’s just released their BEP bottle. I would love to get a hold of that!

I’m currently sipping on an ESB, a British bitter that’s one of my faves. I’ve been to their brewery in Cornwall.

Regardless: that Rattle Snake sounds great, right up my alley. Gonna have to try that one.

ESB is one of my favorite styles, could actually find them in stores and at taprooms. But with the popularity of IPA's and other styles, the ESB offerings are gone. 😥

OK, so I need to put absinthe on my shopping list.... And BTW, we passed spring ages ago. Full on summer now, so if you have some cool summer drinks in your pocket, send them on.

The large flowering Japanese cherry tree in my front yard is in full bloom today, and the petals are falling like snow. It has been blooming for over a week, but there have been no bees. Today, a temperature threshold must have been crossed, because suddenly it is buzzing with honeybees.

Hopefully, Old Glory will show up and share some tropical drinks recipes.

You can probably get away with a small bottle of Absynth as it's typically used sparingly.

Today was a rare summer day in April. It actually hit 92*. I made a Passion Fruit Margarita while I was cooking burgers on the PK360. Potato salad and corn on the cob. A nice taste of summer days to come.

        • 2 ounces rye
        • 3/4 ounce lemon juice
        • 3/4 ounce simple syrup
        • 2 dashes absinthe
        • 1 egg white (I used fee foam)

Dry shake all ingredients, add ice, shake until chilled. Strain into a cocktail glass.

        I'll give this a 4/5 stars.

Bullion Bear Let me know how you like the Fee Foam and the drink. I do about 4 firm dashes, shake, add ice, and shake again.

Just made it, excellent. Used Bulleit Rye. I need to use a little more fee foam next time.

Fee Foam is interesting. I’ll use four dashes next time. First time using it so I only did two dashes. Thanks

I’m mixing up some mezcal cocktails tonight. I’m a big fan of mezcal in cocktails, it really adds an extra depth of flavor over tequila. This is an adaptation of a cocktail called Balam that was served at a resort we stayed at in Mexico on the Yucatan peninsula.
          2 oz mezcal
          1 oz Cointreau
          1 oz lime juice
          1 oz hibiscus syrup

OK, so adding hibiscus and passion fruit syrups to the shopping list, along with mezcal. Seems like I had mezcal in a drink years ago and didn't really like, but then I never gave another chance. Thanks for the tip that TW has classes? I had no idea. I generally order and do the curbside pickup, you guys are broadening my horizens!

I'm no mezcal expert but my understanding is that it can be very different from brand to brand.

Attjack I’m also no mezcal expert, but you are correct. It can vary widely. It can be made from many different types of agave using a few different processes.

Attjack Red Man I just had a mezcalero come to my shop and teach me about how to taste mezcal. It is so personal, almost intimate. After my tasting and class on Saturday, I will weigh in.
