    Snow Day Friday Cocktail Thread

After taking a few weeks off, the unexpectedly large volume of snow provides the inspiration for today's cocktail thread.

    Hot Buttered Rum

This is a good one to keep on hand as you mix up a batch of batter and keep it in the fridge for the right occasion. Then you just add rum and hot water.

    2 teaspoons packed brown sugar
    1 tablespoon unsalted butter, softened
    1 splash pure vanilla extract
    1 dash ground cinnamon
    1 dash ground nutmeg
    1 dash ground allspice
    2 ounces dark rum
    4 ounces hot water
    Cinnamon stick, for garnish

Because I've been snowed in for a couple of days I've already done some practice for the next 2 cocktails.

On the left is a Spanish coffee.

    ¾ oz 151 Proof rum
    ¼ oz Cointreau
    1½ oz Kahlúa
    3 oz coffee
    Whipped cream
    nutmeg
    1 lemon wedge
    Sugar for rimming the glass

I used a lemon wedge to rim the glass and then dipped it in sugar. Add the overproof rum and Cointreau and light that on fire. Turn the glass to caramelize the sugar. Then add the Kahlua and coffee and top with whipped cream and grated nutmeg.

On the right is a Russian coffee that my wife made.

    1 oz Vodka
    1/2 oz Kahlúa
    1 tsp Frangelico
    5 oz hot black coffee
    Whipped cream
    coffee beans

She combined everything in a glass, topped with whipped cream, and garnished with 3 coffee beans.

I was just going to PM you and ask where the cocktail topic is...I finally have one to share. Once I decide on a final name for this drink I will post it as a standalone, but here goes.

I made this after making a Jungle Bird (original recipe below in grey). I didn't really care much for it, I thought it could be better. So after several reiterations and drastically changing the Jungle Bird, here's my 'better':

      INGREDIENTS
      • 1.5 oz. dark rum (I prefer Kraken 94 proof here)
      • 1.5 oz. orange juice
      • 1 oz. Campari
      • 1/2 oz. simple syrup (I used 1:1 here, if using 2:1 use a touch less, say 3/8 oz.)
      • 1/2 oz. fresh lime juice
      • 1/2 oz. fresh lemon juice
      • 2 oz. club soda
      METHOD
      • Mix all but the club soda in a shaker, shake with ice 10-15 sec to chill well
      • Strain into coupe or martini glass
      • Add 2 oz (yes, measure it!) club soda
      • Garnish with twist of lemon peel

      Original Jungle Bird:

      1.5 oz. dark rum
      1.5 oz. pineapple juice
      3/4 oz. campari
      1/2 oz. simple syrup
      1/2 oz. fresh lime juice

notice- no club soda, no lemon, less Campari, and pineapple juice instead of orange

The recipe I have also says to sub in Gin for the Rum. I actually like it better that way. More herbal.

Spanish coffee's are a great hot toddy.
      Here's my version
I prefer using lime as a rimmer with the sugar
      1/2 oz brandy
      3/4 oz Baileys
      3/4 oz Kalhua
      coffee.... if any fits....
      whipped cream
1/2 oz Grand Marnier drizzled over the whipped cream.

smokin fool it’s a blend of rum aged 3 and 23 years. Super happy with it, I switched over to rums last year and have enjoyed the journey so far.

I've never had that kind, never even seen it. Have you tried Kraken 94 proof? That stuff sips like a whiskey. Yummmm.

Old Fashioned. With the WT 101 Rye - I know Huskee would like this one for the WT!

and funny how your palette builds over time, as I would have never thought I would enjoy tequila neat. However, I have been amazed at the flavors tequila has the last few weeks that I have tried a few varieties. My wife has joked with me saying “oh boy, here we go with another collection of booze!”

Oh yeah baby! Just wait til you gitcha some Rare Breed Rye barrel proof. Woo-wee. I too notice some good tequilas are sippable neat, and I used to detest tequila (and gin). I really like Anejos, barrel aged tequila.

Huskee I have the WT Rare Breed bourbon in the cabinet. Really good! Yet to try the RB Rye though. And yes, the Anejos are what I have been trying. I look for the darker anejo tequila and they’ve been good! Casamigos and 1921 are the two that sit in the cabinet currently!

Attjack , those hot coffee drinks almost make me wish for snow, but not really.

I give you the Huskee Bird cocktail. I thought it was fruity and delicious although I did not use fresh orange juice which would clearly make a big difference. Nice one, Huskee .
