If the church really wants us to give up something for Lent, they should do a better job of matching the calendar so that it doesn't match up with National Margarita Day.. I know, I am going straight to hell, but I already knew that..

Many people equate the phrase "give up" with "sacrifice" but their meanings are quite different. The word sacrifice is derived from the Latin words "sacra" and "facere" which together mean "to make holy". Therefore "sacrifice" is more about what you offer rather than what you give up.

Being a religious human construct, hell isn’t much of a deterrent for me. I’ll give up all manner of vices and conveniences for some worldwide righteousness though.

For those who are devout, it is a small act of unquestioned obedience that symbolizes the roots of their faith. For those who are casual, but still practice the (partial) fasting and abstinence, it is a connection to their community and heritage.
