Just gonna put this out there... Lent

If the church really wants us to give up something for Lent, they should do a better job of matching the calendar so that it doesn't match up with National Margarita Day.. I know, I am going straight to hell, but I already knew that..

Thankfully I never bought into it at all.

Spinaker Me neither! But was sent to Catholic school as a kid etc. It was during the prep sessions for the "confirmation" ceremony (age 12) when that happened, ironically.

Many people equate the phrase "give up" with "sacrifice" but their meanings are quite different. The word sacrifice is derived from the Latin words "sacra" and "facere" which together mean "to make holy". Therefore "sacrifice" is more about what you offer rather than what you give up.

Is this where we insert the joke about someone we know being such a bad cook (trying to stay relevant to the site) that they treat us like a god by serving up burnt offerings?

Being a religious human construct, hell isn’t much of a deterrent for me. I’ll give up all manner of vices and conveniences for some worldwide righteousness though.

It’s like the marketing people didn’t talk to the operations team when they came up with their plan.

And along these lines, have you noticed that wine is never required to be abstained from?

People should live the way that makes them happy. Looking for worldwide consensus on the secular and the sacred is a fool’s errand. Respect others.

Amen. Too much taking a side and sneering at the other side, even in jest.

Welcome to The Light, my son. However, since you still carry The Taint of the Sprout you are considered to be an Anti-Sproutite, Second Class. Only through a Cleansing of the Blood will you be able to attain First Class status. It's not cheap, in fact quite expensive, but PM me for further details....

Ahem. *Brussels* (as in Belgium) sprouts. If you hate them you could at least get their name correct, geeze!

I can’t believe I’m reading a thread about religion on the internet and no one has called someone else an idiot, a heretic, or something worse.

BTW, this atheist who was raised Jewish just doesn’t get the whole Lent thing at all.

See that's how life should be. You don't like what I like? Well how about I give you what you do like and I accept that your preferences are just as legit as mine and we enjoy slightly different things?! tstalafuse I'm proud to be a beans-in-chili heretic. I just like 'em. I also like chili w/o beans tho, so who really cares.

For those who are devout, it is a small act of unquestioned obedience that symbolizes the roots of their faith. For those who are casual, but still practice the (partial) fasting and abstinence, it is a connection to their community and heritage.
