Friday Cocktail Thread - I finally got some Falernum

Old Glory Has posted a lot of tiki or tropical cocktails frequently containing falernum but I wasn't able to make them because I had none. Hopefully, he can share some of his favorites in this thread. The time of year might be wrong, but because I finally picked up a bottle, I'm going to make some cocktails with it. Apparently, it's sort of in the same ballpark as orgeat but with additional spices and I like orgeat.

    Test Pilot

    1½ oz. dark rum
    ¾ oz. light rum
    ½ oz. falernum
    ½ oz. orange liqueur
    ½ oz. lime juice
    1 dash angostura bitters
    1 dash absinthe

    California Margarita

    1 1/2 oz. silver tequila
    3/4 oz. triple sec
    3/4 oz. lemon Juice
    1/2 oz. falernum
    pinch of salt

And just to stay within the genre here's what I understand to be a classic Tiki cocktail. This summer I plan to learn a lot more about rums and the Tiki scene.

    Jungle Bird

    1 1/2 ounces blackstrap rum
    3/4 ounce Campari
1 1/2 ounces of pineapple juice
1/2 ounce lime juice, freshly squeezed
    1/2 ounce demerara syrup

    What will you be drinking?

Some of my friends call me a cocktail guru but when I read these posts I realize I am nothing. It's all relative. I have never heard of falernum so I have somethign to Google.

Tonight is a great red wine for me, Blackbird cabernet from Napa.

Attjack I've made those, and we like them! I even have picture proof...somewhere.... It depends on 2 things if we make them though- if we have an opened bottle of red and don't want it in a glass by itself! Rare happenstance.

BTW, you did invent the Key Lime Pie Cocktail which qualifies you as a cocktail guru in my book.

Attjack Woohoo! Well, like George Costanza, I'd better take my leave while I'm ahead!

One of the best reds I've had, it's top tier.

Is it in $100+ price range?

Yes. $150-180/bottle depending where you look. But I could never pay that so I got it from a secret place at a considerable discount. It's one of the best I've ever had. I want to try more of Blackbird's offerings but I need a raise first.

Just logged on to look for your Friday Cocktail post and here it is. The Jungle Bird one of my favorite Tiki Drinks.

I mixed up an Aviation tonight:
    • 2 ounces gin
    • 1/2 ounce maraschino liqueur
    • 1/4 ounce creme de violette
    • 3/4 ounce lemon juice, freshly squeezed
Add the gin, maraschino liqueur, creme de violette and lemon juice to a shaker with ice and shake until well-chilled. Strain into a cocktail glass.

Nothing tonight but if you like falernum in drinks, you need to try a Corn & Oil https://www.liquor.com/recipes/corn-n-oil/

for inspiration, if you like rum... https://www.rumbaonpike.com/cocktails

Rum is an entire universe and lots of fun. I don't know where you are but if you're ever in Seattle, hit up Rumba - 350+ rums, lots of knowledge behind the bar.

No cocktails tonight - had a few Cherry Ciders at our local brew pub by the house that were good.

And now, just cracked open the bottle of Wild Turkey Rare Breed Bourbon i picked up yesterday. Initial sip is good, a little hot with it coming in at 116 proof, but good flavor to start. See how it opens as I let it sit for a few.

and as Old Glory mentioned, these posts are always my friday favorites! Ha….I think it was 10-11am when I was already looking for your upcoming cocktails

        • 2 ounces blackstrap rum (or aged Barbados rum)
        • 1/2 ounce falernum
        • 1/2 ounce lime juice, freshly squeezed
        • 3 dashes Angostura bitters

Fill a rocks glass with ice.

Add the rum, falernum, lime juice and bitters and stir to combine. (Alternatively, you can add the rum last by slowly pouring it over the back of a bar spoon so that it floats on top of the drink.)

        Garnish with a lime wedge.

This is excellent. Thanks, for the suggestion, rickgregory .
