    Fridays Require Cocktails

Here are the cocktails I will be drinking this weekend. These first two are pretty similar. They require different whiskeys and different types of vermouth but share the same delicious liqueurs.

    Bensonhurst

2 oz. rye whiskey (preferably Rittenhouse)
1 oz. dry vermouth (preferably Dolin)
2 teaspoons maraschino liqueur (preferably Luxardo)
    1 teaspoon Cynar

    Five Keys

    1 1/3 oz. Bourbon whiskey
3/4 oz. Martini Rosso sweet vermouth
    1/4 oz. Luxardo maraschino liqueur
1/4 oz. Cynar or other carciofo amaro

Here's a good one for those of you who just aren't going to bother making a more complicated cocktail. I have some amaretto I made long ago and a bottle of scotch ready.

    Godfather

2 oz. blended scotch or bourbon
    1/4 oz. amaretto

Hopefully, I'll make it to the liquor store this weekend because I am running low on rye, rums, and I have wanted to get some falernum ever since Old Glory started posting delicious-sounding cocktails using it. I have never tried it before.

    What will you be drinking?

Landon's Cabernet Reserve for sure, then maybe Dirt Farmer from Bingham Vinyards.

Sorry to hear about your day. Adversity and alcohol aren't always the best combination.

Something with bourbon or rye in it, haven’t decided yet. Have most or all of the ingredients above, maybe I’ll try some of your cocktails. Cheers!

I picked up a bottle of Oregon Spirits Bourbon Bottled in Bond, so will have a sip of that. Also may make a Martinez - been a bit since I’ve had this cocktail.

also thinking of going out tonight with my wife, seeing where we end up for a beverage

      cheers all!

I want to hear your review. I actually haven't had their spirits before. Next time I'm in Bend I should stop in as it appears that they allow my kind at the tasting room.

          Mary Queen of Scotts
1 1/3 oz Scotch Whiskey I used Monkey Shoulder
          2/3 oz Green Chartreuse
          2/3 oz Drambuie

Pour over ice in an old fashioned glass. Stir to chill. Garnish with lemon rind.

A riff off of a Rusty Nail. More herbal and less sweet.

Here we go. Oregon Spirit SBBB Bourbon Whiskey.

back in November, a coworker of mine who I have known for a while gave me a gift of mini bourbon bottles, and within that bag of wonderful goodies was a single of Oregon Spirit Bourbon Whiskey. I found this single to be one of the best bourbons I have had, as it had to me a sweeter profile, which is what I like in the bourbons I drink. And not that it’s sweet, but I like a bourbon that is forward with that profile and that is what this provides.

Normally, when I drink Bottled in Bond varieties, I add a tiny drop of water, but I find this specific Oregon Spirit SBBB to not need it. The flavor profile of this is wonderful, smooth and balanced, as it matches up to what the distiller has under the profile of Kettle Corn, Dark Fruit, Caramel, Vanilla.

I wish I had the regular bottle of bourbon to do a side by side comparison and see if the higher price point was worth the difference. This is not a cheap bottle at $70, but at times its worth it to splurge on a bottle that you drink every now and then. They also offer a rye and wheat bottle to go with both of the bourbons.

Attjack - hopefully their distillery is somewhat close to you, make a trip and give it a try! That would be a great experience!

Bend is a few hours away but worth the trip. It's been a while since I was last there. It's a great town. We even considered moving there at one point. Next time I'm there I will definitely hit up that distillery.

Well, tonight we had dinner at my oldest daughter’s house, and I took a 750ml bottle of St. Bernardus Christmas Ale and a 750ml bottle of Delerium Noel. Shared with my son in law along with a honey brown that he had on tap. The Saint Bernardus was by far the best. Oh - we also had Straight to Ale Unibtanium. I sure had my fill of high alcohol beer and may have to swear it off the rest of the weekend!

The awesome thing was that we found the reason for dinner was so they could tell us that grand baby #3 is on the way! So we will have two grand babies born this year - March and August. We feel so blessed! It was a great end to a week in which my wife Yvonne had clear cancer scans, and is now on a 6 month checkup interval instead of every 3 months.

            • 2 oz. rye whiskey (I used Templeton)
            • 1 oz. dry vermouth (I used Noilly Prat)
            • 2 teaspoons Luxardo Maraschino liqueur
            • 1 teaspoon Cynar
Stir with ice and strain into a chilled glass. Garnish with a Luxardo cherry.

@barefly this is my new Nick and Nora glass my wife surprised me with.

I liked this cocktail more and more as I sipped it. It had a good level of complexity.

Love the glass! I like this shape better than a coupe style!

And both the cocktails look great!

This is a good cocktail but I preferred the Bensonhurst above because it was a little dryer.

              • 2 oz. blended scotch or bourbon
              • 1/4 oz. amaretto

Build over a large ice cube in a rocks glass and stir.

I was not a fan. It was too sweet and one dimensional. It made me wish I had a better scotch served neat instead.

Great point, some things seem like a great match and just aren't, like my buddy who thought Bourbon and grape pop would be a match....
In his defense Grape-a-roo was all that was left in the motel pop machine.

Attjack - I picked up a bottle of Cynar yesterday and am looking at making a cocktail this evening with it. What would you suggest - I enjoy manhattans, Martinez, Old Fashioned’s - all great cocktails and perhaps similar flavor profiles. Seems as if the Bensonhurst would be a great cocktail to start with?

What would you make me if I were sitting at that wonderful bar of yours?

Yes, the Bensonhurst would be an excellent choice given you preferences. I just made a couple of smoke and mirrors just now. The Campari is the star in this one though. If you want to branch out with something different the Artichoke Hold is a Cynar cocktail that I really like as well.
