Saturday Cocktail - The Last Word

Not sure if this one has been covered before here. A refreshing mix of herbal and botanical liquors balanced with fresh lime juice. Gin, Maraschino, Green Chartreuse, and lime in equal parts. Fresh and tasty.

The Last Word was created and was then promptly forgotten for decades, before being brought back to to become more popular than ever.

The Last Word dates to Prohibition, as far as anyone can tell, and except for a brief mention in Bottoms Up!—a 1951 cocktail manual by Ted Saucier—the drink languished in obscurity until the early 2000s, when Seattle bartender Murray Stenson dusted off the recipe and began serving the drink to customers at Zig Zag Café. Fast-forward to the present day, and the Last Word is a fully revived classic, gracing the bar menus in cities around the globe. More popular now than it ever was in its youth, the Last Word is a surprisingly tasty balance of four ingredients —gin, lemon, Maraschino, and green Chartreuse— working in perfect unison. Mix one up this weekend, and make up for lost time.

    The Last Word
    • 3/4 ounce gin
    • 3/4 ounce green Chartreuse
    • 3/4 ounce maraschino liqueur
    • 3/4 ounce lime juice, freshly squeezed

Add the gin, green Chartreuse, maraschino liqueur and lime juice into a shaker with ice and shake until well-chilled. Strain into a chilled coupe glass.
Garnish with a brandied cherry (optional).

That sounds tasty. Not sure if there's any chartreuse in the liquor cabinet. For sure there's no maraschino liqueur in that cabinet. Looks like a fun drink for Xmas, garnished with lime and one of those scarily red maraschino cherries.

I put this in Paprika. Thanks!

Maraschino is one of my favorite liqueurs. Real maraschino cherries are dark red and nothing like the cheap one dimensional cherries you get with an ice cream Sunday. They're expensive though about $25 for a jar but worth it in my opinion. I've also made my own from local cherries and they were pretty darn good.

Excellent! I’m sure I’d like this. Just need to get the chartreuse added to the bar. Thanks for sharing!

Chartreuse can be an acquired taste, it's almost medicinal. Probably haven't brought a bottle in 40 plus years....maybe time again and give this cocktail a go.

It was not overpowering in this drink. You could defiantly taste it but it balanced well with the gin and lime.

I think I mentioned The Last Word on a Friday thread in October but it deserves mentioning again. Great cocktail. I've heard people on Reddit complain they are having trouble finding Chartreuse. Fortunately, I'm still holding.

Another similar cocktail is the Lumière.

        Lumière ★★★★
        Cocktails, Gin

        Ingredients:

        1 1⁄2 oz. gin
1 oz. elderflower liqueur, like St. Germain
        3⁄4 oz. fresh lime juice
        3⁄4 oz. green Chartreuse
        Dash of orange bitters

        Directions:

Combine all ingredients in a large glass filled with ice.
Stir thoroughly and strain the mixture into a coupe.
        Garnish with a lime twist.

        Notes:

This recipe, developed by Nitehawk Cinema‘s Beverage Director Jen Marshall, was inspired by the Oscar-nominated film Hugo. The magical sophistication of elderflower, citrus, and green chartreuse mirrors Hugo’s and Isabella’s enchanting quest through 1930’s Paris.

        Bonus Jack Rose Cocktail

        2 oz Apple Jack
        3/4 oz Grenadine
        3/4 oz Fresh Lime Juice

Combine, shake, and strain. Garnish with a lime wheel.

A favorite of Humphrey Bogart, Errol Flynn, Ernest Hemingway and John Steinbeck, the Jack Rose is a tasty applejack sour, and is one of the popular cocktails from the 1020s. Its name is likely derived from the jack of the applejack and the cocktail's light rose coloring from the grenadine.

Applejack is similar to apple brandy. A strong liquor (often bottled at 80 proof) with a rich apple flavor that's perfect for cocktails like this.

In true classic cocktail style, the Jack Rose has a nice balance of sweet and sour to accent the base liquor. You can adjust the lime juice and grenadine to suit your personal taste, just like countless drinkers before you.

It's been a long time since I've had apple jack stocked. When I last did it was Laird's. I should get some.
