Feeling Old Fashioned on this Friday

Rain is finally coming after a very long dry spell for the Pacific Northwest. It's hard to complain given our air quality has been literally the worst on the planet due to smoke. That rain will undoubtedly knock some of that pollution out of the atmosphere. To celebrate I plan to make some Old Fashioneds this weekend. What will you be mixing?

    Oaxacan Old Fashioned
    • 1.5 oz tequila
    • .5 oz mezcal
    • 2 dashes Angostura
    • bar spoon of agave nectar

    Garnish: Orange peel

    Gin Old Fashioned
    • 2 ounces gin
    • 1 teaspoon simple syrup
    • 2 dashes Angostura Bitters

Garnish: Lemon twist and optionally an olive.

    Old Fashioned Whiskey Cocktail
    • 2 ounces rye whiskey
    • 1 teaspoon simple syrup
    • 2 dashes Angostura Bitters

Garnish: Lemon twist and optionally a cherry.

I am planning on marinading an entire bag of ice cubes in Jack Daniels, 6 at a time!

May I recommend upping your ice game? I like a big cube in my rocks glass. That way it stays cold longer which may or may not be an issue depending on how fast you're throwing them back. But it also limits the dilution of your spirit. One way to go is to buy a special ice tray and another way is to freeze large blocks of ice in Tupperware and then use an ice pick to shape your rocks.

Attjack My Wife ( Scotch drinker) likes the big cubes so they limit the dilution. As a Bourbon drinker ( before moving to the Jack Daniels) I enjoy the way the spirt opens up with the melting ice….

I almost always drink my whiskey neat but if I'm drinking a particularly high-proof whiskey I'll add a splash of water to open it up.

jfmorris what kind of rye do you like? I need to pick some up. It'll give me an excuse to visit my new favorite liquor store.

Attjack January is mid-ice fishing season and I’m not going out there without libations. I’m getting thirsty!

I decided to start with the classic. I used Buffalo Trace, rich demerara simple syrup, and Angostura.

My wife was feeling a bit fanciful tonight and asked me to make her the drink I made for her years ago ( I bartended for almost 25 years) while we were dating. “ the one that tasted like it came from a box of candy”

I give you the raspberry truffle

      1.5 oz Kailua
      1oz Absolute Raspberry
      3 oz 1/2 and 1/2

shake and watch the lady smile!

Here is how I do it. 1 sugar cube in a lowball. Dash of bitters to soak the cube. Stir a jar of cherries then use the spoon to muddle the cube. Add ice, and whisky and stir. Bruise an orange peel, and rub around the rim. Enjoy.

I used a cube for a long time but now prefer a syrup.

The Oregon Ducks game necessitates a Bloody Mary.

Sounds tasty! I always make my syrups rich because a 2:1 syrup is shelf stable while 1:1 syrup will eventually grow mold. Apparently, that makes the syrup 33% sweeter so you can adjust recipes accordingly.
