For me it depends, if it's a strong meat such as brisket, I go for a Scotch ale like OB Old Chub or a RIS such as a Founder's, with chicken it would be some type of Ale like Sierra Nevada or if I'm lucky a Pliny. Let me know!

Old Country offset smoker, 22†Weber Kettle, 4 burner gas. Oak logs, Royal Oak Lump, Kingsford Briqs, Gas.
I like a brown ale such as Surly Bender or Newcastle with pork. I tend to drink Alaskan Amber or something similar with beef. If we're eating hotdogs, I'm drinking Red Dog. When sitting down to drink beer, where beer is the center of attention, I like to drink barrel aged beers, porters, and stouts.

I don't drink. OK, OK - maybe a lil drinky every once in a while. I have a gene that makes bitter flavors taste bad, and hops adds bitterness. So any beer I drink has to have very little hops and be below 30 IBUs, (International Bitterness Units), and preferably below 20 IBUs. So I drink mostly wheat beers.

Wheat beers are tasty!
I seldom deviate from my Daily Driver, Guinness Extra Stout...
When I do, a few local wheats are often called upon:
Boulevard Wheat, from KCMO...
Wheat State Golden, from right here in town...
Both places offer takeaway Growlers!!!
I Highly Recommend Paulaner Hefeweizen, as well...quite likely one of th tastiest brews I have ever had...

Large Big Green Egg, Weber Performer Deluxe, Weber Smokey Joe Silver, Maverick 732, DigiQ, and too much other stuff to mention.
I like pilsners for summer meals. I think the crispness complements the general heaviness of the typical offering.
But that’s not to say I wouldn’t drink just about anything. The only beers I don’t care much for are the sours. And, I don’t like the overly strong stuff that tastes like someone dropped a shot of whiskey into it (I’m looking at you, Old Curmudgeon).

Gimme a good craft Brown Ale, Pilsner or Lager with my day of smoking. I notice sour beers don't get a lot of love around here but I love them as well. If anyone is interested in trading beer from their area every once and a while let me know. The Sacramento area is fully saturated with great quality local beers. I can't even keep up anymore with all the breweries that have opened here in the last year.
